The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (Unical), Prof. Florence Obi has commended the “Sports for Life initiative”, saying the programme will enable students to participate actively in Sporting activities.

Prof. Obi who gave the commendation during the Launch of the ‘Sports For Life Initiative’ Programme in Unical thanked the funding bodies for bringing such a programme to the institution.

According to her, the programme will enable more students to embrace sports while studying hard to be successful in their academics.

While declaring her unalloyed support for the programme’, the University helmsman said it will lead to the discovery of many hidden talents that can compete nationally and internationally.

Hear her, "This programme will lead to more participation in sports for all students and staff of the institution irrespective of their course of study. This will also lead to the discovery of many talents that can go national and international.

"The institution is delighted to be a part of this initiative as there is a need to build and discover more talents in the university community".

She urged the funding bodies- Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to continue to partner with the institution in life-changing programmes for students, just as she tasked students to key into the programme.

In a remark, the Cross River State Clinical Coordinator of AHF, Dr. Ifeanyi Udenkwo said the program domiciled in Unical will promote sporting activities and help curtail the misuse of drugs and substances in the institution.

He said the initiative encourages students to live a drug-free and healthy lifestyle to achieve their dreams and charged students to always check their HIV status on a 3-month basis, saying there is a Counselling Center and Desk officers in all departments of the institution saddled with this responsibility.

 The Coordinator, Unical Youth Hub and Alumni, Mrs Grace Ibor thanked the funding bodies and the Vice Chancellor for the initiative and support.

She encouraged students to participate in sporting activities as well as practice healthy living.
