The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has bagged the Calabar Community, University of Calabar (CALCOM) Award of Honour in recognition of her friendly disposition and immense support for CALCOM and other University-based community associations.

Speaking during a brief award presentation ceremony in the Vice Chancellor's office, the Chairman of CALCOM-UCB, Elder Ephraim Bassey commended the Vice Chancellor for her support and for graciously approving the holding of the maiden CALCOM Day celebration on campus.

Describing the Vice Chancellor as a very passionate University Administrator who is committed to the growth and continuous development of the Institution, Elder Ephraim said her approval availed CALCOM to showcase the rich culture and values of their people, as well as, launch the CALCOM Education Endowment fund.

It should be noted that CALCOM-DAY featured a colourful parade of cultural relics and masquerade drawn from the five local governments of the Cross River North Senatorial District comprising Bakassi, Akpabuyo, Calabar South, Calabar Municipal and Odukpani.

In her response, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi while thanking the leadership and members of CALCOM for the honour done to her charged CALCOM and other community-based associations to take ownership and show concern for the development of the Ivory Tower.

Prof Obi congratulated CALCOM for the success of the just concluded CALCOM Day, noting that, the essence of the event was to celebrate culture and enhance the values that bond them together.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended CALCOM for the initiative of raising funds to support the less privileged in the community, noting that, this will go a long way in assuaging the financial challenges faced by some indigent students who may, at a point, consider dropping out of school.

She said the financial assistance by CALCOM may not be much but the motives behind their actions are quite commendable.

The Varsity administrator stressed that the community should be more concerned about visionary leaders who are committed to improving the quality of education, and infrastructures, and not those whose sole aim is to embezzle funds

Prof Obi emphasized the need for staff to develop a neck-deep commitment towards work, even as she said that determination should always be their watchword.

This came as she urged them to be good ambassadors of the University by living an exemplary life and having a good attitude and mindset towards work.
