The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has charged the over 90 newly inducted Professional Teachers to be committed to the noble profession in the course of their practice.

The Vice-Chancellor gave this charge at the Senate Chambers of the University during the 4th Induction and Oath taking ceremony of Professional Teachers conducted by the Teacher's Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), for graduands of the Institute of Education, Unical.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Eno Grace Nta, the Vice Chancellor said the university is obligated to raise professionals in different disciplines in both learning and character, noting that, she is confident that the 90 inductees have been well nurtured to become proud ambassadors of the University.

 

She admonished the inductees to be committed to their profession, adding that, the University is proud to send them out as her ambassadors who are fit and ready to blaze.

According to her, "I congratulate you! It's been a lot of hard work, but more importantly, we demand commitment. It is not about the paper qualification, it is the commitment to your profession.

"Be our ambassadors. Do not disappoint us. Go and blaze forth and let the world know that something good is happening at the University of Calabar".

The University helmsman also thanked the institute and all the lecturers for giving their best in the development of the inductees, this is even as she thanked the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) for a good job, stating that, nobody can tell any story in the academia without remembering their Teachers.

She urged the new inductees not to forget to give back to their Alma mater which has made them great men and women.

The Director, of the Institute of Education, University of Calabar, Prof. Paul Itari in his welcome address said quality education can only be a reality if teachers are trained professionally.

He stated that induction is one of the most important academic rituals that initiates graduates into their chosen profession, adding that, for the graduates, the experience will expose them to real-life situations where the practical skills of the field and discipline of education will henceforth be required of them.

He also used the opportunity to thank the Vice Chancellor and the University Management for providing an enabling environment to educate, train and produce this crop of quality graduates.

Prof. Itari who described the graduates as knowledgeable, creative, imaginative, resourceful and obedient to constituted authority, commended the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) for the wonderful and memorable ceremony.

In a remark, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers' Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Josiah Olusegun appreciated and applauded the commitment of the Vice Chancellor for always giving high premium to the (TRCN) protocols enhancing her quality assurance trade mark in conformity with International best practices.

To the Director, of the Institute of Education and all the lecturers, the TRCN CEO had this to say; "you are not only creating lives, but you are moulding lives".

The Registrar who was represented by the Director of Operations, Dr Bimbo Okunola urged the inductees to always dress well and smart thereby challenging their students to imbibe the qualities of professional Teachers.

"We believe in you, and you will be the one to change the narrative in our classrooms" he added.

He however warned, that there will be sanctions for those who fail to abide by the rules and ethics of the profession, this is even as he urged them to go out and impact society positively

Speaking on behalf of the inductees, Nene Williams Amos appreciated the management and the lecturers who took pains in moulding them to be the professionals they have become, this is even as she promised that her set will not fail the University and the Professional body.

The event featured an induction lecture delivered by Dr Stephen A. Odey who spoke on the topic, "Professional Knowledge: Essential Vitamin to Unlock Quality Education. The Worth of Professional Teachers".
