The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar Prof Florence Obi has charged the newly admitted Students of the Postgraduate School to be industrious to achieve their academic pursuits.

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge at the recently concluded Orientation Ceremony for the 2021/2022 Postgraduate School Students at the Institution's International Conference Center.

Prof. Obi while welcoming the Postgraduate students to the Institution for the pursuit of Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy programmes said graduates of the University are defined by their sense of industry which makes them good ambassadors of the great citadel of learning.

She stated that the strides of the University of Calabar of today have surpassed that of yesterday hence the need for the students to brace up and focus on their studies so they can graduate at the right time because the institution as a whole is ready to reposition the graduate school.

Prof. Obi said that the institution is ready for serious business because the University is no longer going to delay any student from graduating when he should, that if it is a three years program, it is going to be three years.

The Vice-Chancellor requested the students to take the opportunity that is available to them, adding that Management is making an effort to attract sponsorship for scholarships for the students to expose them to International communities.

She tasked the students to buy lots of books, and read widely, because as researchers there is a need to be vast in their quest for knowledge, assuring them that, they will be given full attention by their supervisors and lecturers.

Earlier, the Registrar of the University, Amb. Gabriel Egbe also called on the Postgraduate students to abide by the rules, laws and regulations guiding the University of Calabar.

The Registrar stated that for effective and efficient performance, students should abide by the core rules guiding the school and also follow the laid-down principles of the Institution.

The Bursar of the Institution, Prince Joseph Odum charged the Postgraduate students to pay their fees and other relevant charges on time so that they can have access to everything that is required for the success of their academic pursuit

In his address, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Eyong Ubana Eyong admonished the students to be on their best and highest behaviour stating that, each and everyone will be given their due respect.

Prof. Eyong said he has advised all Heads of Departments to assign supervisors to each student for their thesis Immediately after they are admitted.

The Dean of the Postgraduate School said the Orientation exercise aimed to answer a few questions like the administrative structure of the Postgraduate School and its registration procedure, payment of school fees and approved charges, course waivers and programs credit load as well as students' rights and obligations.

Other aims according to the Dean include answering questions concerning operations of Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate committees, Turnitin and Postgraduate School E-LEARNING platform, Use of the University library and learning resources, Approved associations in the Institution and Postgraduate School-based general courses.

The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr Tony Eyang in his presentation stated that discipline, hard work, focus and determination are keys to success in the University.

He said for an association to be acceptable on the University campus, that association must be registered by the Students' Affairs and must have a staff adviser and also be approved by the Vice-Chancellor.

Dr Eyang said that whatever association the students must belong to, the association should be able to shape, mould and condition them for the tasks ahead.
