Dr. Uchenna Catherine Okonkwo joined the University of Calabar as Lecturer I in 2011. She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine in 2014. Uchenna graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 1998. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (2009) and National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (2010). Dr Okonkwo is presently a Chief Consultant with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. She specializes in Gastroenterology/Hepatology/Gastro-intestinal Endoscopy and has been heading the Gastroenterology Unit since its inception in 2012. She is involved in the training of Undergraduate Medical Students and Post-graduate Resident Doctors in General Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr Uchenna has supervised/cosupervised several Post-Graduate Dissertations in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She has served as the Faculty of Medicine Representative to Faculty of Library Sciences (2014-2015) and is presently serving as Chairman, Departmental Welfare Committee. Dr Uchenna is a beneficiary of the 2014 University of Calabar Institutional-based Tertiary Education Trust Fund grant. She also received grant from Micronova Pharmaceutical Company for drug trials in 2014. Dr Uchenna is currently serving Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice, Nigerian Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, among others as reviewer. She is an examiner for the West African College of Physicians (2017-date). Dr Uchenna has published many articles in both local and international peer-review Journals. She has also attended several local and international conferences. She is presently supervising over three graduate students.
