About Prof. Simon Odey Ering

Simon Odey Ering is a Professor of Sociology with specialization in Development Sociology. He began his career in the University of Calabar, Calabar – Nigeria in April 1994 as a Graduate Assistant after his graduation and NYSC in 1992, and 1993 respectively. He holds B.Sc., Hons. (2nd Class Upper Division) 1992, M.Sc., 1998 and Ph.D, 2005 all from the University of Calabar. Prof. Ering has been teaching, conducting researches and engaged in community service till date. He was Head of Department of Sociology, 2010-2012; Coordinator Bachelor Social work (B.Sc. Social Work) programme, University of Calabar (2006 – 2010); a member of Management Team, Unical Distance Learning Programme (UNCP, 1998-2000); Coordinator Diploma in Social Work Programme, 1998-2000. Ering is a member of several committees and these are; Senate Result Vetting Committee; University of Calabar NYSC Vetting Committee; Screening Committee and a member University of Calabar Strategic Planning and Resource Mobilization Committee. He has been the zonal coordinator Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association (NASA), South-South zone and an Associate Editor, National Association of Social Work Education (NASWE), Journal of Social Research; Editor, Multi-Disciplinary Journal of Research and Development Perspectives, and Editorial Board member, Sacha and Diamond Academic Publishers, United Kingdom. Prof. Ering is also a member of several professional associations: International Sociological Association (ISA), Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association (NASA) and Nigerian Association of Social Work Educators (NASWE); a fellow of University of Calabar Post Graduate Students Association and a fellow Institute of Corporate Administrators. He is a consultant to World Bank, UNICEF, WHO, NEWMAP, UNH4 (UNICEF, WHO, WORLD BANK and UNDP), Ford Foundation MacArthur Foundation, Girls Power Initiative (GPI) and was a member of Vision 20:2020 in Human Development Thematic Area. He has been teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ering has successfully supervised 13 (thirteen) PhDs and 22 (twenty-two) M.Scs, and has authored and co-authored over 51 (fifty-one) peer reviewed journal articles in both local and foreign journals. He has to his credit two (2) published books and a monograph. He has served as External Examiner in many universities both within and outside Nigeria. He has won many academic scholarships and prizes and specifically as the best student scholarship award in Department of Sociology, University of Calabar, 1989/1990, Cross River Government Scholarship for best student, Government Secondary School, Ikom and best all round student award, Federal School of Arts and Science, Ogoja. Ering has attended several conferences within Nigeria and outside the country and have received many research grants and fellowships. His research interest is in social protection policies, social policy, economic development, gender issues and community development. He is a visiting professor to University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. Ering is a Christian of Foursquare Gospel Church denomination and is happily married and the union is blessed with four children.
