About Prof. Raphael Pius Abia

Prof. Raphael Pius Abia is an academic staff in the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria. He joined the services of the University in 1998 as a Graduate Assistant and was promoted to the rank of Professor in Medical Sociology in 2016. He is the first Professor of Medical Sociology at the University of Calabar. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Political Science/Public Administration from the defunct Cross River State University, Uyo (now University of Uyo) in 1991. The University of Calabar awarded him M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Medical Sociology in 2001 and 2005 respectively. His academic and research interests span Health, Politics, Social Issues, Social Work, Culture and Anthropological Studies, Population and Population Dynamics, Gender and Equality Studies, Education and Religious Issues. Prof. Abia has been teaching, mentoring, researching and rendering broad-based community services since joining the University thereby contributing to the graduation of students at all levels. He has successfully supervised and co-supervised over ten graduate students. He has published over fifty articles in reputable peer-reviewed local and international journals. Raphael Abia has authored two books titled 'Sociology of the Third World: A Conceptual Approach' and 'Governance in Nigeria'. Prof. Raphael Abia has been serving many journals as a reviewer. He has also served the University in many other capacities including Head of Department (2021 till date) and Chairman, Field Visit Committee (2010-2012). Prof. Abia is a member of many professional bodies including the National Programme on the Prevention of Maternal Mortality. He is the Torchbearer and General Overseer of Indomitable Christ Mandate Church, Nigeria. Prof. Abia is a happily married man with children.
