About Dr. Philomena Edet Asuquo

Dr. Philomena Asuquo is a staff in the Institute of Oceanography, University of Calabar, Nigeria, a position she took up on the 28th day of May 2008 as an Assistant Research Fellow. She progressively rose to the post of Research Fellow I on 15th October 2015, a position she still holds presently. Dr Philomena Edet Asuquo is a well-trained and staff that specializes in key areas of Fisheries and Aquaculture including feeding ecology of aquatic organisms, morphometric and molecular studies and marine pollution by heavy metals. Dr. Philomena obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Zoology (Fisheries) in 1992, M.Sc. degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Zoology and Environmental Biology (Fisheries and Aquaculture) in 2015. All the degrees were obtained from the University Of Calabar, Calabar. Additionally, she holds a certificate in computer appreciation and trainings from short courses that she attended in Netherlands and Turkey. She is a beneficiary of several grants and fellowships including University of Calabar Study Fellowship (2011-2013), Netherlands Fellowship Programme (2011), Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (2012), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (2014 & 2018). In addition to research, Dr. Asuquo is actively involved in the teaching of several courses in diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the University. She has mentored and contributed to the graduation of many students in the University. She as participated in various conferences both local and international, and has published six papers in international journals and four papers in local journals. Dr. Asuquo has held several service positions in the University of Calabar including; Coordinator, Diploma in Marine Science programme, (2011-2013), Head of Unit/Farm Manager, Fisheries and Aquaculture (2015 - till date), Assistant Coordinator- MACORN (2018 - till date). She has also served in different capacities in various committees within the university, some of which include: Institute of Oceanography Representative to different Faculty Boards, member, Institute of Oceanography Graduate Committee, LOC Member, International Conference on Oceanography and Public lecture, both organized by Institute of Oceanography, University Of Calabar, Calabar. She is a member of various professional bodies and associations such as Ocean Expert and Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON). She has been involved in several community projects as an executive member under the platform of the Nigerian Red Cross Society .
