About Dr. Olaitan Ruth Asuquo

Dr Olaitan Ruth Asuquo started her career in the Department of Anatomical Sciences as a demonstrator in 2002. After completion of her Master of Science (MSc) degree in Histochemistry, she was employed as an Assistant Lecturer on the 17th of October, 2007. She has risen through the file and rank and is currently a Senior Lecturer. She started her primary education at Girls’ Modern academy, S/W Ikoyi, Lagos from 1979-1983. She started her secondary school education at Army Comprehensive high School, Akure from 1984 to 1990. Her set was the pioneer of the 6-3-3-4 system of education in Ondo State. Due to her academic excellence, she was on a six years scholarship for secondary school girls awarded by the then wife of the governor of Ondo State, Late Mrs Feyisetan Olabode George. She gained admission into the University of Calabar in 1992 to study Human Anatomy where she graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Anatomy. She embarked on the pursuit of her Master of Science (M.Sc) program in Histochemistry also from the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Calabar in 2002 and graduated in 2005. Immediately after completion of her M.Sc, she started her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in 2006, which she completed in 2012. Due to her keenness on education, she went further to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), which she is about to defend. Dr Olaitan Ruth Asuquo has been a recipient of several grants from the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) of which she is a member. She had received travel grants to attend conferences and also won two (2) fellowships. One was awarded for Young Investigators Program under the auspices of IBRO in conjunction with the European neuroscience Association where she underwent training at the Laboratory of Professor Ana Paula Pereira de Silva Martins in the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; and Institute of Biomedical Research on Light and Image (IBILI), Faculty of medicine, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal in 2011. She also enjoyed another IBRO sponsored Fellowship in 2011 to the Cape Town School on Advanced Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience in Cape Town, South Africa. Dr Asuquo has been a recipient of several awards. She benefited from a six (6) years scholarship award from the Ondo State Ministry of Education during her post-primary education from 1984 to 1990. She also enjoyed a scholarship award from the Cross River State Government for her overall M.Sc and PhD programs. She won the best Poster Presentation award to the tune of €1,000 from IBRO during her 8th IBRO World Congress in Florence, Italy in 2011. She has taught and still teaching medical students both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels foe twelve (12) years now. She has presented several papers at conferences both at local and international levels. She has been a reviewer for several well reputed journals such as Neuroscience Journal of Nigeria, Merit Research Journal of Medicine and Medical Science, Asian Journal of Andrology etc. Dr Asuquo has mentored graduate students at the various cadres. She has supervised 3 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), 3 Master of Science (MSc) and currently supervising a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) as the first Supervisor. She has attended both international and local conferences. She has to her credit twenty-nine publications from reputable local and international journals. To date, she has attended nineteen scientific conferences and presented her research findings at these meetings. She has served as National Executive Member and Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC) Welfare Subcommittee of the 3 days training workshop/conference on the 3Rs in Research and Teaching in a Developing Country, Calabar; Chairman, LOC Welfare Subcommittee and Member, Scientific subcommittee of the 10th Annual Conference of the Neuroscience of Nigeria, Calabar; Chairman, LOC Welfare Subcommittee of the 7th Annual scientific conference of the Anatomical Society of South-South and South-Eastern Nigeria, now Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria. Others include Chairman, LOC Welfare Subcommittee of the 16th Annual Scientific Conference and General meeting of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria held in Calabar between October 9-12, 2019.Currently in her laboratory, work is ongoing on the scientific benefits of locally available antioxidants found in spices and herbs. She is a member of several professional associations including International Federation of Association of Anatomists, International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, Women in World Neuroscience, L’Oréal for Women in Neuroscience, Animal Care and Use in Research, Education and Teaching, American Society of Neurochemistry, International Society for Neurochemistry, Third World Academy of Science, Society of Neuroscientists of Africa, Society for Neuroscience, Anatomical Society for West Africa, Neuroscience Society of Nigeria, Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria and Anatomical Society of Nigeria.
