About Dr. Peter Onen Oka

Peter Onen Oka came into the academic cadre of the University of Calabar as a Graduate Assistant in 2007 and has risen to Lecturer I, a level he attained in 2016. He had his Primary and Secondary education at ST. Anne’s Primary School, Abeokuta and Community Secondary School, Ugep respectively. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography and Regional Planning, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Geography and Environmental Science (with bias in Biogeography and Biodiversity Conservation), all from University of Calabar, Nigeria. He is a recipient of Professor Maurice Ebong’s Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Geography and Regional Planning (2003/2004), and a beneficiary of University of Calabar Study Fellowship (2011 – 2014). He lectures Physical Geography, Biogeography, Bioclimatology, Wildlife Resources Management and Contemporary Philosophy and Methodology in Geography at both Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels. He has successfully mentored and supervised student’s research work at Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels. Currently, he is the Project/Research Coordinator for Undergraduate students in the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Calabar. He has also attended many academic workshops and presented academic papers in many conferences, addressing environmental issues of international and local concern. He has participated as a resource person to student’s practical fieldwork experience. His completed personal research is on the following: (a) Biodiversity Loss: A case study on agricultural crop in Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria. (2004) (b) Biodiversity Status of Green Areas in Ugep, Cross River State, Nigeria. (2009) (c) Evaluation of environmental influence on avian community in Okwangwo Range of Cross River National Park, Nigeria. (2014). His membership of learned societies is in the following: (a) Association of Nigerian Geographers (b) European Centre for Research Training and Development (c) International Biogeography Society Inc. (d) Society for Ecological Restoration. Over the past two years, he has conducted training courses on Wildlife Research and Conservation in rural communities. Currently have twenty-one (21) Journal publications to his credit.
