About Dr. Iya Eze Bassey

Dr Iya Eze Bassey is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria where she has been contributing to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Chemical Pathology. She was employed as a Graduate Assistant in 2001 and has since risen through the ranks to be promoted Senior Lecturer in 2016. Dr Bassey attended University of Calabar, Calabar where she obtained her B.MLS, M.Sc, and PhD degrees in Chemical Pathology in 1998, 2005 and 2014 respectively. Her main areas of research include prostate cancer, male infertility and metabolic syndrome. Since joining the University, she has been teaching, researching and mentoring students at all levels thereby contributing to their training. She has successfully supervised and co-supervised over four graduate students theses comprising two MScs and two PhDs. She has published over forty two articles in local and international peer reviewed journals in her area of specialty. She has served and is still serving as reviewer to many academic journals. Dr Iya Bassey is a regular participant in many conferences in her field of study. She has attended more than twenty national and international conferences and served member of the Local Organising Committee in some of them. She is currently the Site Principal Investigator (PI) of Cross River State for Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium’s (CaPTC) Transatlantic Prostate Cancer Familial Project (2017) which is global project that will recruit over 2,000 West African men to understand and effectively address prostate cancer in men. She is also the site co-PI of Cross River State for the Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) and IRONMAN studies. These are all projects funded by grants from CaPTC and National Cancer Institutes, USA. She was awarded a TETFUND Institutional Based Research Grant in 2013 and has also been a recipient of many travel grants including Tetfund conference travel grant to Canada – 2012; UICC conference travel grant to Canada - 2012; AFCC Travel grant to IFCC Worldlab Istanbul, Turkey – 2014; 4th Science of Global Prostate cancer Disparities (SGCaPD) in black men USA conference travel grant – 2016; AORTIC Travel grant to AORTIC 2017 conference Kigali, Rwanda. 5th Science of Global Prostate cancer Disparities (SGCaPD) in black men Ilorin conference travel grant – 2018 and the Global Congress on Clinical Trials in Blacks, Lagos travel grants – 2018. She is currently collaborating with the Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC), a consortium specializing in prostate cancer. Currently, she is a member of the Nigerian Association Clinical Chemists, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Institute of Medical Laboratory Science of Nigeria, Nigerian Cancer Society, AORTIC, Africa and Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC), West Africa. She is happily married with children.
