About Dr. Magdalene Edet Ikpi

Magdalene E. Ikpi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. She took up employment in the University of Calabar as Graduate Assistant in July, 1998 and rose through the ranks to her current position. She obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the prestigious University of Cambridge, United Kingdom where her research on Semiconductors focused on the Growth, characterization and device processing of III-V semiconductor Quantum dot structures on GaAs patterned substrates. She holds a M.Sc. degree in Physical Chemistry and a B.Sc. degree with First Class Honours, both of the University of Calabar, Nigeria. She is a recipient of the CAS-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011-2012) at the State Key Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection, Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Shenyang, China. She won the 2012 China-Africa Science and Technology Partnership Program (CASTEP) award for Equipment donation worth One hundred and fifty thousand Yuan (RMB 150,000). The award was administered through the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. This award made possible the procurement of the state-of-the-art Gamry Potentiostat/Galvanostat (Reference 600) for the furtherance of research on return to Nigeria. Together with supporting funds, she established the Corrosion and Electrochemical Research Laboratory (CER-Lab), the first of its kind in the history of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Her academic career involves research across a number of areas namely low dimensional quantum structures, corrosion performance of magnesium alloys, corrosion inhibition studies as well as corrosion studies of buried oil/gas transmission pipelines in soils of the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria. In addition, she has been actively involved in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Physical Chemistry as well as taking on Applied Chemistry courses under the Applied Chemistry programme of the Department. She offers part-time teaching in Material Science and Semiconductor Physics to undergraduate students in Physics Department due to her expertise in designing, growth, fabrication and luminescence measurements of a p-i-n light emitting diode. M. E. Ikpi is a reviewer for the Journal of Bio- and Tribo- corrosion and Global Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences. She has published in both international and national peer-reviewed journals and has made presentations at a number of international conferences in Warwick (UK), Edinburgh (UK), Gliwice (POLAND) and Kuwait City (KUWAIT) and a local conference at Ota (NIGERIA). Magdalene Ikpi is a Full Member, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Member, Institute of Physics (IOP), UK, Member, Chemical Society of Nigeria, (CSN) and Member, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, (ICCON). Her experience at work as a University Lecturer has spanned beyond the lecture halls and laboratory to several responsibilities and administrative roles that she has been privileged to take on, but most fulfilling and exciting have been the countless students (both undergraduate and postgraduate students) whom she has interacted with whilst teaching, advising and mentoring.
