About Dr. Ifeyinwa Maryann Okafor

Dr. Okafor Ifeyinwa Mary Ann is a Medical Laboratory Scientist by Profession with specialty in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science. She joined the service of the University of Calabar in June, 2010 as a Faculty Member . Prior to this she was a staff of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where she worked for 6 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Subspecialty unit before joining the University of Calabar. She is currently a Lecturer 1 in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Haematology and blood transfusion Science Unit of University of Calabar, Cross River State Nigeria. She holds a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree in Haematology and Blood transfusion Science, and also obtained a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Haematology, all from University of Calabar, Nigeria. She has several learned publications in reputable journals both locally and internationally and has attended several conferences to date. She has been actively involved in the supervision of students both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My research interest is in nutritional anaemia, haematology oncology and blood diseases, advanced haematological techniques, haemoglobinopathies, haemostasis/coagulation studies, immunohaematology. Major research has been in nutitional anaemia, assessing iron status of pregnant women, studies on anaemia and malaria infection in pregnancy, Cobalamin, folate and iron studies among smokers. I am also interested in mentoring. Acquiring skills that will enable me to be a good mentor is also my goal She is a member of the following organizations namely: British Society for Haematology, Nigeria Council Society, British society for Blood Transfusion Services, International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis , Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
