About Dr. Emmanuel Edet Effa

Dr. Emmanuel Effa is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Calabar, honorary chief Consultant physician/Nephrologist to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, as well as the acting head of Internal Medicine at both institutions since October 2016.He obtained his MBBCh degree in 1999 from the University of Calabar and trained in Nephrology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, South west Nigeria. He was awarded the Fellowship of Medical College of Physique (FMCP) by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2010 and won the Dr. Mabayoje prize for the best candidate in Nephrology for that year. He is an International Society of Nephrology (ISN) scholar following a 6-month clinical nephrology fellowship at Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Department of Medicine, University of cape Town/Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. He completed a postgraduate certificate in medical education with the Centre for Medical Education of the University of Dundee, Scotland. Dr. Effa pioneered kidney care services at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in 2009 and supervised the establishment of its haemodialysis unit. Presently, he also serves as a Cross River State Government appointed Consultant Nephrologist to the MTN Foundation Haemodialysis project at the General Hospital, Calabar. He teaches medical students, supervises house officers, trains and mentors resident doctors and supervises nurses and other allied health staff in his team. He has served as external examiner to the MBBCh programme of College of Health sciences, Abia State University. His research interests include general medicine, acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy. He also has experience insystematic reviews,priority setting and clinical audits. He has authored and co-authored several reviews published in the ‘Cochrane Library’, a high impact journal of the Cochrane Collaboration. He serves as editor with the Cochrane Infectious Diseases and Cochrane Kidney and Transplant groups as well as the Editor-in-chief of the Cross River Journal of Medicine, a peer reviewed biomedical journal published by the Nigerian Medical Association, Cross River State chapter. He is a peer referee for several journals including Medicine, Nephrology, BMC Health Services, Nigerian journal of Medicine, Tropical Journal of Nephrology, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology and Journal of Medicine in Africa. He has over 35 published scholarly articles in both local and international journals. Dr. Effa coordinates training in Evidence Based Healthcare and systematic reviews at Cochrane Nigeria located at the Calabar Institute of Tropical Diseases Research and Prevention, UCTH in collaboration with the Effective Healthcare Research Consortium at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Cochrane Africa Network. He serves as the co-principal investigator for this project. He is also the Principal Investigator for an ISN funded “Early Kidney evaluation and prevention study” presently ongoing in Cross River State. He is the Co-Principal Investigator for the West African Hub of the Cochrane African Network, a project focused on systematic review priority setting, evidence dissemination and stakeholder engagement across West, East and Southern Africa. He has attended several nephrology conferences organised by the American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, European Renal Association, South African Renal Association as well as the Nigerian Association of Nephrologists(NAN). He was the LOC chairman for the 27th Annual conference of NAN in Calabar in 2015. He served as Examination Officer in the department of Internal medicine between 2014 and 2016 as well as a member of the Faculty Lecture Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calabar from 2014 till date.
