About Prof. Daniel Ama-Abasi


Professor Daniel Ama-Abasi joined the employ of the University of Calabar as a Junior Research Fellow in 1991, under the European Economic Community (EEC) Fellowship Programme for the Aquaculture Development in the Oil Palm Belt of Nigeria. He obtained his MSc. and Ph.D. in 1995 and 2003 respectively. He rose through the rank to the position of Professor in 2015. Professor Ama-Abasi won the Fulbright Fellowship in 1998 and was a Visiting scholar in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA from 1998-1999. He won the International Foundation for Science Research Grants in Stockholm, Sweden in 1999 and 2002. In 2016 he was awarded the prestigious National Research Fund by Tetfund. He has won the University of Calabar Senate Research Grants three times in 1997, 2000 & 2007. Professor Ama-Abasi has served the University in various capacities as Coordinator in Marine Science programme, Coordinator of Diploma in Marine Science, Chairman of Institute of Oceanography Graduate Committee, Chairman of Staff and Students Disciplinary Committee, Examination Malpractice Committee, Central Time-Table Committee, Member of 2018 Mock Accreditation Committee. He has published 44 articles in both Local and International Journals of high reputability. His papers are liberally indexed in Scopus, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Thomson-Reuters Web of Knowledge, African Journal Online, Asian Science Citation Index.  His teaching and research interests are the areas of Fisheries Biology and management, Marine ecology, Pollution and toxicology, impact of climate change on fisheries, Domestication of threatened species. Professor Ama-Abasi is a mentor par excellence; he has supervised and graduated 2 Ph.D. students, 4 M.Sc. students and scores of B.Sc. students in different Universities in Nigeria. He has attended over 40 conferences at home and abroad, including in such cities as Jerusalem, Edinburgh, Arizona, Denver in Colorado, USA, Addis Ababa. Professor Ama-Abasi is happily married to Racheal Ama-Abasi with four sons. He is a Christian leader with interest in Youth work as member of Scripture Union, Nigeria. He is also a member of several Learned Society including Fisheries Society of Nigeria, American Fisheries Society, Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria.
