About Prof. Ayi Anyama Ayi

Ayi Anyama Ayi received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1995 and 2002, respectively from the University of Calabar. He was a TWAS South-South Visiting Scholar in 2000, & a TWAS Postdoctoral Fellow (2003-2004) at Jawarhalal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, India, under Prof. C. N. R. Rao. As a man of considerable drive and resourcefulness, Ayi has demonstrated immense capacity for independent academic work, which has won him more professional accomplishments as recipient of (i) DAAD Research Fellowship (May- July, 2009), with Prof. Andreas Taubert at Potsdam University/Max Planck Institute of Colloid and Surface Chemistry, Golm, Germany, (ii) Commonwealth Academic Fellowship (2009 - 2010) with Prof. Andrew Burrows at University of Bath, Claverton Down, BA 2 7AY, UK, & (iii) Fulbright African Research Fellowship (2010 -2011), with Prof. Abraham Clearfield at Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, USA. Ayi, A. A., has designed and isolated various novel open-framework materials such as metal-organophosphonate frameworks, open-framework metal phosphates, selenates and sulfates and acetate-phosphate dimmers for possible applications in separation chemistry, catalysis and adsorption studies. He unraveled the formation mechanism of various open-framework metal phosphates, by isolating a zero-dimensional monomer and successfully transforming it to a one-, two- and three-dimensional network structure. He is an author of a chemistry text titled Understanding Inorganic Chemistry through Problems and Solutions. He was the acting Head of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Calabar, Nigeria (March 2013- February, 2015) and during his sabbatical leave with Federal University Lafia, he was appointed Acting Head of the Department of Chemistry (September 17, 2015 – August 31, 2016). Currently, Professor Ayi is the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Director of Inorganic Materials Research Laboratory. His interest is in the development of syntheses, structures and properties of Metal-Organic Framework Materials (MOFs). He is also working on nanomaterials syntheses using ionic liquids/ plant extracts and evaluation of their antimicrobial activities. He is a recipient of TWAS Research Grant (2013 -2015), & RSC Personal Research Grant (2014 -2015). He is a member of many professional bodies and Editorial boards.
