About Dr. Anthony Achizie Iwuafor

Anthony Iwuafor is a lecturer in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, in the faculty of Medicine, College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar Nigeria. He is also a Clinical Microbiology Consultant to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPath), specialized in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology. He is also Registered Environmental Specialist (RES), being a registered member of the National Registered Environmental Professionals, (NREP), USA. He has MPH and PGD (Health Safety and Environmental Management), both from College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria, and MSc (Medical Microbiology and Parasitology) from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, Nigeria. He currently serves as the Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Calabar. He also serves as a reviewer for the PLoS ONE Journal. He belongs to the following professional associations: 1. College of Nigerian Pathologists (CNP) 2. American Society for Microbiology (ASM) 3. International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID) 4. Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of Nigeria (CLIMIDSON Dr. Anthony Iwuafor is skilled in biomedical research, medical education, epidemiology, biostatistics and environmental health management. His research area spans a wide range of concerns on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases. He is currently working on coinfection of intestinal parasites amongst the HIV/AIDs patients, and risk factors and Control of diarrhoea secondary to intestinal parasites. In the field of malariology, he has currently won a TETFUND Institution-based Research grant to monitor the occurrence or possible spread of antimalarial drug resistance using Kelch-13 molecular maker. Dr. Iwuafor is also an Implementation Research Specialist. After, receiving an intensive training on this rare research area from WHO-TDR, his next research project will be to determine Barriers and facilitators to the 5 chemo-preventable Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Control Programs. This will be an implementation-focused Evaluation to stimulate adaptation and achieve sustainability in the NTDs control programs in Nigeria. He has at sundry times presented at some of the local and international conferences he attended in the research areas of his interest. He has authored and co-authored a couple of research articles published in peer-reviewed journals including PLos One and BMC Infectious diseases journals
