About Prof. Anthony Martin Udosen

Anthony Martin Udosen, an indigene of Ikot Eyem in Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria was born in April 1960 and obtained his first school leaving certificate with a distinction in 1973 and an excellent result in the General certificate examinations in 1979. He proceeded to the University of Calabar where he obtained his Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh) in 1987 and subsequently bagged the Professional Fellowship in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (FMCOrtho) from the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria. He is also a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons FWACS as well as fellow of the international College of Surgeons. Prof Udosen is a fellow of the AO international and an active member of the world Orthopaedic and trauma Organization (SICOT). He teaches Orthopedic and Traumatology in the University of Calabar and was promoted to the rank of professor in 2010. He is a former head of both the academic and clinical aspects of that Discipline. Prof. Udosen is a Chief Consultant Ortho/Trauma surgeon to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital since 1999 and a visiting consultant Surgeon and professor to the University of Uyo and University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. He was the head of the Accident and Emergency Division of the University of Calabar Teaching hospital from 2000 to 2009. Prof. Udosen is a former Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and a postgraduate examiner in Orthopaedics and trauma to the National Postgraduate College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons. He has attended many courses and seminars locally and internationally. He teaches Advance Trauma Life support, Traumatology, Bone and joint injuries and infections, metabolic bone diseases, Wounds and wound management among others. He is a researcher and prolific writer with many publications in reputable journals to his credit. His major research interests are in the areas of Rural Traumatology, Low back pain and the development of indigenous Orthopaedic Appliances. His book publications include ‘Basic Principles of Emergency Management of Trauma’, ‘The Houseman’ and ‘Take Care of Your Bones’ among others. He is the current Chairman of the Post Graduate Committee of the Faculty and has supervised several postgraduate students at various levels. Prof. Udosen is a member of many professional associations including Nigeria Orthopaedic Association, Nigerian Medical Association, Association of Surgeons of Nigeria and many others. He is the founder of the Martin Udosen Education and Human Development Foundation, which caters for the holistic welfare of the less privileged in his community. He also co-founded the PRACTIMED Medicals that produces indigenous ortho-trauma wares. He is married with children.
