About Dr. Ann Afamefuna Jerry Mofunanya

Dr. (Mrs) Ann Afamefuna Jerry Mofunanya is a seasoned and erudite scholar with specialization in Plant Physiology/Pathology (Virology). She is working on the control of plant viruses using plant extracts; Biological, serological and molecular characterization of viruses infecting cucurbits. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. She obtained a Ph.D degree in Botany (Plant Physiology/Pathology) and M.Sc. degree in Pharmacology (Chemotherapy) from the University of Calabar in 2011 and 2002 respectively. She was awarded a B.Sc. degree in Applied Biology (Plant Ecology) by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State in 1995. Dr. Ann Afamefuna Jerry Mofunanya joined the services of the University of Calabar in 1997 as a Graduate Assistant. She rose through the ranks and was promoted Senior Lecturer in October, 2013. Since joining the University, she has been involved in teaching, mentoring, research and contributing to students’ graduation in the University at all levels. Her major research areas include control of Telfairia mosaic virus on susceptible host plants, Soil acidity and alkalinity amelioration for crop improvement, stored products management. Others include effects of plant viruses and organics on crop physiology and biochemistry. Dr. Ann Mofunanya has served as Examinations Officer (2008-2015) in the Department of Botany, Chairperson, Department of Botany Welfare Committee (2011-2019), Member, Departmental Examinations Misconduct Committee (2011-2014), Treasurer, Local Organizing Committee of the 5th Annual Conference of Mycological Society of Nigeria (2012), amongst others. She has successfully supervised and co-supervised over five graduate students comprising two M.Scs and two Ph.Ds theses. Dr. Ann Mofunanya has over thirty scientific papers in reputable Journals within and outside the country. She is the author of a book titled “Effect of Simulated Acid Rain on the Nutrient Quality”. She is co- Author of General Plant Physiology textbook and a Contributor to Basic Botany for Undergraduates textbook. Dr. Ann A. J. Mofunanya is a reviewer to some International Scientific Journals: Journal of Experimental Agriculture International, Asian Journal of Advances in Agricultural Research, Asian Research Journal of Agriculture, Asian Journal of Research in Crop Science, International Journal of Biochemistry Research & Review, European Journal of Medicinal Plants, International Journal of Plant & Soil Science and Annual Research & Review in Biology.She has attended many seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops where she made presentations. Dr. Ann Mofunanya was awarded Best student in the 30th Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) Science Quiz and Exhibition that was held in Ugep Nigeria in 1989, Best Graduating Student in Applied Biology (1994/1995 session) in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria and Best Examinations Officer, Department of Botany (2010). Dr. Ann also secured the Institution-based Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Grant in 2016 as Co-Researcher. Dr. Ann Mofunanya is a member of some professional associations among which are Botanical Society of Nigeria, Ecological Society of Nigeria, Organic Agriculture Project in Tertiary Institution in Nigeria, Mycological Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Society for Plant Protection and Plant Virology Society of Nigeria.
