About Dr. Ubong Bassey Akpan

Dr Ubong Bassey Akpan was first employed in January 2016 as a resident doctor in the University of Uyo Teaching hospital. He transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in 2009 for his Senior Residency Training in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Following his completion and success at the May, 2012 examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, he was employed as a medical consultant on 31st January 2013. He was later employed in the University of Calabar in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was promoted to the rank of a Senior Lecturer in October 2017. Before then, Dr. Akpan obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1984. He did his Secondary Education at the St. Patrick’s College and Obtained his Secondary School Certificate in 1992. He was admitted to the University of Calabar in 1995 and obtained Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh) in 2003. Following his successful completion of the residency training he was awarded Fellow, Medical Postgraduate College of Nigeria in May 2012 (FMCOG) and Fellow, West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in October, 2016. He has been actively involved in training of medical students and postgraduate students in Obstetrics and. He has supervised more than Five Postgraduate dissertations. He is presently the coordinator for house officers training in the department. He is also an examiner for the National Postgraduate medical College of Nigeria, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has received several awards including recognition in the WOMAL trial research which was coordinated at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr Akpan has been involved in various projects with International Organizations including Data Quality Assessment on Maternal and child health, Bill & Medina Gate’s project on antenatal weight gain which he is currently the institution principal investigator. He is a member of many professional bodies including Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. He has attended more than 10 professional conferences and has presented more than five papers. He has peer reviewed many international journals. He has published over 30 scholarly researched articles in peer review journals and five book chapters with more than 800 citations in Google Scholar and 480 citations in Scopus. Ubong as he is fondly called by close associates, is married to his heartthrob and the marriage is bless with children. .
