About Prof. Sunday Okon Udo

Prof. Sunday Okon Udo is a Nigerian Professor of Atmospheric Physics/Environmental Consultant. His academic qualifications are: B.Sc (Hons) Physics (1979-1983), M.Sc(Atmospheric Physics) (1984-1987) both from University of Calabar and Ph.D (Atmospheric Physics), University of Ilorin (1993-1997). He also attended a 9-month non-graduating programme on computing at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronic and Manufacturing Engineering (APEME), University of Dundee, United Kingdom (1984-1985). He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate at Distinction level in 1973 and West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1977. Prof. Udo is an astute researcher, who has published many scholarly researched articles in both reputable local and foreign journals. He has also co-authored three books. His major interests are in Atmospheric and Environmental Physics which involve the applications of physics in understanding various processes and solving problems relating to Earth’s atmosphere (lower) and other parts of the Earth system at the local, regional and global levels. He is particularly interested in issues of climate change. He started his university teaching career as a Graduate Assistant in 1984; he was employed within one month to the completion of his NYSC program courtesy of his brilliant academic performance in his B.Sc. program. He rose through the ranks and became a professor in 2008. He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Physics, University of Calabar. He had been a visiting scholar (sabbatical) to the University of Uyo, and Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Cross River State University of Technology, Calabar. He has mentored and supervised over 15 post graduate students. He delights in the fact that some of his ex-students are now Professors. He was the Head of Department of Physics between 2007 and 2009. Prof. Udo is a consultant and the consulting editor of Nigerian Journal of Physics, Global Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences, and International Journal of Climatology amongst others. He has attended several local and international conferences/workshops where he presented papers. On the course of his study/working, he has received several scholarships and grants. These include: (i) Cross River State scholarship for B.sc programme (ii) University of Calabar sponsorship for M.Sc. and Ph.D. programms by virtue of being appointed as Graduate Assistant (iii) World Bank Assisted scholarship through nomination by University of Calabar for a 9-month training programme at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronic and Manufacturing Engineering (APEME), University of Dundee, UK. Awards obtained on the course of his career include: (i) Best Lecturer (Academic) award for 2012 and 2013. (given by students of Department of Physics, University of Calabar) (ii) Awards of excellence by over 10 organizations as a result of his leadership positions and contributions to the growth of those organizations/institutions. Some of the projects he has so far executed or participated include; (i) Study of the effect of soil moisture and soil compactness on soil temperature (ii) Study of the overlapping effect of infrared absorption bands on transmission function (iii) Measurement and analyses of global solar and atmospheric radiations at Ilorin, Nigeria (iv) Presently he is a recipient (as a Principal Researcher) of award for research under TETFUND National Research Fund (NRF) project 2014. The title of the research is: Characterization of Air Quality Parameters in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria. He has served meritoriously inside and outside the University Community in various aspects. He has been appointed or elected Chairman/Member of various standing/ad hoc committees (over 20) in the University. He is/has been Chairman/Member of various socio-cultural organizations inside and outside the University Community to which he has also been awarded several awards of excellence. He is a patron to many socio-cultural groups. Prof. Udo is a member of the following professional bodies-Nigerian Institute of Physics, Nigerian Environmental Society and New York Academic of Science. He has organized and sponsored advocacy visits and outreaches to sensitize and encourage students to embrace science subjects generally and physics particularly as part of their academic development. The beneficiaries of such outreaches are secondary schools in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State etc. S. O, as he is foundly called by his colleagues, friends and admirers is an articulate, humble and humane person who passionately believes and practice cheerful positive Energy Transfer to all that come his way. He is a father of four children and a grandfather. He is happily married to his heartthrob Anni.
