About Prof. Paul Dick Ekwere

Professor Paul Dick Ekwere was born in Afaha Offiong, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He attended the Lutheran School, Afaha Offiong briefly before moving to St. George’s Anglican School, Zaria, Northern Nigeria for his Primary education. For his Secondary and Higher School, Professor Ekwere attended the prestigious Government College, Umuahia from 1961 to 1966. As a medical graduate of the University of Ibadan in June 1973, Paul became the first Medical Doctor from Afaha Offiong. He went on to study Surgery first at UCH, Ibadan before proceeding to the United Kingdom for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, where he obtained the FRCS, before going on to sub-specialise in Urology. Professor Ekwere also holds the Fellowships of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS). On his return from the United Kingdom, he was appointed the first Lecturer in Urology at the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, and first Honorary Consultant Urological Surgeon to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in April 1984, to pioneer the specialty of Urology to its present status (35 years) as a full Hospital Department of Urology. Professor Ekwere before now had worked in several countries and held various positions in hospitals and training centres in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. In the course of his working career, Dr Ekwere also served in various distinguished positions as Consultant Urological Surgeon in several hospitals in Saudi Arabia before returning to Nigeria. Dr Ekwere distinguished himself in his pioneering work in Urology, rising through the ranks to become the first Professor of Urology, University of Calabar, and Chief Consultant Urologist, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria. He has held a number of academic and administrative positions and responsibilities at the University of Calabar, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), University of Uyo, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, (UUTH), Uyo, Assir Central Hospital (Teaching), Abha, Saudi Arabia, and the Billasmar General Hospital, Billasmar, Saudi Arabia, where he also served as the Chief Medical Director. In addition, Professor Ekwere has held the following distinguished Positions: 1. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), University of Uyo, Nigeria – 2013-2014. 2. Two terms as Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Uyo – 2009-2013. 3. Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Calabar – 2006-2009. 4. Member of Board of Governors of the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar. 5. Member Board of Governors, College of Health Sciences, University of Uyo. 6. Chairman, Committee of Deans at the University of Uyo (2010-2013) 7. Twice member of the University of Uyo Governing Council until December 2014. 8. Twice the Head, Department of Surgery, UCTH, Calabar, earlier in his career 9. Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee and Director of Clinical Services and Training, UCTH, Calabar. 10. Member of the Governing Board of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). 11. Now the pioneer Head of the newly created Hospital Department of Urology, UCTH, Calabar. Prof. Ekwere was twice Chief Examiner, Department of Surgery, University of Calabar, Examiner, West African College of Surgeons and External Examiner to some universities across Nigeria. He has served in Accreditation Teams of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and of The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCN). He is the author of 48 journal and conference publications and two Books, and a reviewer for the Annals of Saudi Medicine Journal, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Journal of the National Medical Association, USA and African Journal of Urology, Cairo, Egypt, as well as past Editor-in-Chief, Cancer News (a Publication of the Nigerian Cancer Society) for a number of years, and Editorial Adviser to the World Journal of Bio-Medical Sciences, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Uyo. He also reviewed a Book titled: “Basic MCQ Workbook (For Medical Students and Doctors)” by Dr Sunday B. Udoh and Dr Inyang A. Ukot. Professor Ekwere is well travelled and has attended courses, workshops, seminars and conferences, nationally and internationally in UK, USA, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and has given at least 14 Conference and 12 public lectures and keynote addresses at 26 conferences. He is a member of many learned societies including, Nigerian Association of Urological Surgeons (NAUS), Pan African Urological Surgeons Association (PAUSA), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), New York Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National President, Association of Surgeons of Nigeria (ASON). He has also been honoured with appointment as a United Nations Peace Advocate and is an awardee of Ambassador for Peace and Evangelist for Peace, as well as Patron of his Community’s Youth Caucus. He is also currently the President of Esop Nta-Ifiok Akwa Ibom, a socio-cultural association and Think-Tank. Professor Ekwere, a born-again Christian leader, has also served as the Chairman, Calabar for Jesus Crusade and Chairman of Council, Unical Chapel of Redemption, University of Calabar, Calabar. He currently sponsors the Covenant Prayer Group in his home Community, Afaha Offiong. Professor Ekwere is married to Mrs Jiejo Paul Ekwere and they have been blessed with five adult children and adorable grandchildren.
