About Dr. Maria Bisong Onabe

Dr. (Mrs.) Maria Bisong Onabe started lecturing as a Graduate Assistant in 2003 with the University of Technology (CRUTECH). She was later moved to the Cross River College of Education, Akamkpa in 2007. For passion in Practical Agriculture, she became the Practical Farm Coordinator throughout the period she spent in the College. In her tenancy in exploring the academic world, she was employed on path time with the University of Calabar in the Department of Vocational Education (Agric. Edu.) Unit in 2008. Her hard work and passion on teaching rear Agric practical courses such as Beekeeping (Honey Production) and Snail production saw her being made a permanent staff in 2011. Dr. Mrs. Onabe had been working hard and has risen to the rank of Lecturer I and she is to put in for Senior Lecturer October 1st 2019. Dr. (Mrs.) Onabe has a great passion in the development of Apiculture, in the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria and Africa as a whole. She is the Apiculture Coordinator in the University of Calabar Apiary, Treasurer, Nigeria Apiculture Platform and the Federation of Nigerian Beekeepers Association (FEBKAN). She has represented UNICAL, Nigeria and Africa in National and International Congresses, Exhibitions and Conferences. In Apimondia Istanbul, Turkey in 2017 she exhibited organic bee wax from Cross River State that was adjudged to be one of the best in the world Bee products and equipment exhibited at Api-Expo Africa 2018 coordinated by her earned Cross River State First (1st) position in Exhibition in the whole of Africa and Second (2nd) position in production/innovation. Maria Bisong Onabe (Nee Ogar) was born on the 10th of October, 1962 in Maternity Clinic Kakwagom, Boki LGA of Cross River State, She started her early education in St. Patrick’s Primary School Kakwagom and relocated to Rivers State to continue her primary education in Birabi Memorial Grammer school in Bori-Ogoni. She later returned home finish her primary school in Kakwagom in 1975. In her quest to further her education she wrote and passed the state common entrance in Ikom Zone in 1976 and gained admission into the Prestigious Girls Secondary School Obudu in the same year where she obtained her West African Schools Certificate in 1981. She later gained admission into the then Federal Poly Yola which was relocated to Mubi to study Agricultural Technology and obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in 1985. She then left school after the death of her mother and sort for a job with Cross River State Post Primary Schools Board as a science teacher (Agric Science and Chemistry). She later returned to school to start a Degree Programme in 1997 to read Agricultural Education and graduated in 2001. To continue her quest to go higher, she went to do a Post Graduate Degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension where she graduated in 2006 and proceeded immediately to do a Ph.D in the same area above. Dr. (Mrs.) Maria Bisong Onabe have attended several conferences, workshops, Exhibitions, and symposiums both home and abroad and participated actively in all. One of the Bee conferences at Istanbul, Turkey, she exhibited bee products such as Beeswax and Honey from Cross River State that were adjudged amongst the best in the world. She has published in local and International peer review journals and five textbooks in Beekeeping, nail farming and fishery. She has co-authored some articles with like minds in research from Faculties of Education, Agriculture, Sciences (Genetics, Entomology etc) and Forestry. She has supervised, mentored and taught students at graduate and now in Post Graduate levels. Dr. (Mrs.) Maria is married to the love of life, Mr. Francis Bisong. The union is blessed with three wonderful and lovely children. Maria is a mother and a friend to students, colleagues and others. She is social, pragmatic, optimistic and an erudite scholar.
