About Dr. Margaret Inemesit Akpan

Dr. Margaret Inemesit Akpan is an Epidemiologist in the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar, Calabar. She obtained her B.Sc nursing in 1992 from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, she went further to do her master’s and Ph.D. in Public Health epidemiology in the University of Calabar in 2010 and 2018 respectively. She became a Registered Nurse in 1983 and a Registered Midwife in 1985. Her research works are many, one being on Cervical Cancer Among Women which drew the attention of a charitable Non-Governmental Organization in the US-Ekopimo Ibia Foundation to immunize girls between the ages of 9-14 years with Human Papilloma Vaccine (Cervarix) against cervical cancer. She has 22 publications and she is a member/reviewer of abstracts with American Public Health Association of which she is a regular presenter at her annual general meetings and Expo in the US. As a nurse, she has carried out clinical work in various areas and has lectured as a nurse/midwife educator in both schools of nursing and midwifery. She was a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Nursing Science from 2005 to 2018 when she transferred her services to the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar. She carried out various ad hoc activities in EU-PRIME (Partnership to Reinforce Immunization Efficiency), Positive Development Foundation of HIV/AIDS, Research Assistant in discordant couples in post exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). A Fellow of the West African College of Nursing (WACN), with many conferences attended and posts held. She is the immediate past sub regional chairman of the Faculty of Community Health Nursing in WACN.
