About Dr. Mary Esien Kooffreh

Dr Mary Esien Kooffreh, a staff in the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, was employed by the University 21st March 1991. She was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in Human Genetics in 2016. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Biology (Genetics) awarded by the University of Calabar in 1989, a Masters degree in Genetics and Cell Biology and PhD in Zoology (Human Genetics) from the University of Ibadan 1995 and 2012 respectively, Nigeria. She is an Associate Professor of Human Genetics and belongs to many professional Bodies that include American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG), Genetics Society of Nigeria (GSN), Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), Organization of Women in Science (OWSD), University of Calabar Institutional Biosafety Committee amongst others. She has attended many academic local and international conferences and workshops where she presented papers. She has successfully mentored many undergraduate and post graduate students. She has also published scholarly articles in both local and International journals. Dr Kooffreh has also held other position of responsibilities including the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology Examination Misconduct Committee between 2005 and 2006, Faculty of Science Representative to faculty of Allied Medical Sciences (2012-2013), Acting Head of Department of Genetics and Biotechnology (2013-2015), Graduate School Vetting Officer (2018- to date) and by election became the Sub- Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences (2016 – 2018), Deputy Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences, 2018- to date. She is happily married.
