About Dr. James Otoburu Okpiliya

Dr. Okpiliya was employed as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria in October, 1998. He was promoted to the rank of an Associate Professor in the same Department in 2016. Dr Okpiliya holds a Nigeria Certificate in Education specializing in English and Music awarded by Federal College of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State in 1990, B.A. Ed. (English), MA. and Ph.D degrees in English awarded by the University of Calabar in 1994, 1998 and 2005, respectively. He is a prolific teacher who has been teaching, researching and mentoring students in the University since he joined the services of the University. He has attended and presented papers in several local and international conferences. Dr Okpiliya has published journal articles in both local and foreign journals. He has successfully supervised and co-supervised many graduate student’s theses in the University. Dr Okpiliya has served the University in many other capacities including Co-oordinator of Use of English between 2002-2004, and 2008, Academic, Examinations Officer at both the Centre for General Studies and the Department of English and Literary Studies both at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels from 2008 to 2010, Secretary, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU (2008 – 2010), Chairman, ASUU (2010 – 2014), Member, University of Calabar Senate (2015 to date), Member, University of Calabar Governing Council (2013 – 2017), Deputy Director, Centre for Educational Services (2014 – 2015) and Director, Centre for Educational Services (2015 to date) among many others. Dr Okpoliya is also a member of many Professional bodies including American Studies Association and Reading Association of Nigeria. He is married with three children.
