About Dr. Glory Mbe Nja

Dr Glory Mbe Egom Nja is an academic staff in the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria. She earned her Ph.D degree in Public Health (2015); Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH, 2006); B.Sc. degree in Nursing Science (1998); and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (2009). All her degrees were awarded by the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Dr. Glory Nja also holds several Certificates in Research and Health Systems Strengthening (2012) from the Centre for Excellence, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Kenya; Advanced Human Resource Management from the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, Topo-Badagry, Lagos (2012); Introduction to Cochrane Systematic Reviews & Evidence Based Medicine (2019); Advanced Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institutions on Data Analysis using SPSS 23 (2020); and Managing Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (UNFPA Online Course Module, 2020) among others. Her professional qualifications include Post-Basic Diploma in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Nursing (2000) from the National Ear Care Centre, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos; Registered Midwife Certificate (1993); and Registered Nurse Certificate (1989) from the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Calabar respectively. Dr Glory Nja is a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing (2009) and a Fellow, Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria (2010). Dr Nja served the Cross River State Ministry of Health as Staff Nurse in the then Infectious Diseases Hospital, Calabar between 1989 and 1992, and later transferred her services to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where she worked as Registered Nurse/Midwife in the Nursing Services Department between 1993 and 2004. Between 2000 and 2006, she served as Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Post Basic Paediatric Nursing, UCTH. She was subsequently appointed Principal Nurse Educator and redeployed to the Federal School of Nursing, UCTH, where she served between 2004 and 2007. She was later redeployed in 2008 from the UCTH School of Nursing to facilitate the establishment of School of Post-Basic ENT Nursing in Cross River State as Founding Programme Coordinator, straddling the operation of both Steering Committee and the Technical Working Group as Secretary. With the support of the State Government and the UCTH, Dr Glory Nja worked tirelessly with exemplary commitment and dedication and ably coordinated the job of taking her vision for a school of Post Basic ENT Nursing in Cross River State from concept to design and implementation in less than twenty-two months. She successfully brought the progress of the new school to the enviable stage of appreciation and accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in September 2009, and commenced academic activities in November 2009. Dr Nja was subsequently appointed Principal and Chief Executive Officer of the School, a position she held until January 2017, when she transferred her services to the University of Calabar. Prior to her transfer of service to the University of Calabar, Dr Glory Nja enjoyed a steady career progression and attained the rank of Deputy Director in 2016. Since joining the University of Calabar in 2017, Dr Glory Nja has been teaching, mentoring and supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has successfully supervised and co-supervised some graduate students in the University. She has published and co-authored over ten journal articles in both local and international reputable journals. She also co-authored the training manuals for Post Basic ENT Nursing Education in Nigeria, and the National Open University of Nigeria, where she serves on a part time basis as Instructional/Tutorial Facilitator/Preceptor and Project Supervisor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Calabar Centre. She is the head of the Health Services Management Unit of the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar. Dr Nja is a registered member of several corporate organisations, including The Network: Towards Unity for Health; Women and Health: Together for the Future; and Public Health Advocates. She is also a member of other learned/professional associations including Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa; National Association of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Nurse Practitioners in Nigeria (NAORLPN), where she served as National Chairman between 2006 and 2012, and Chairman, Local Organising Committee, NAORLPN Conference and General Meeting that was held in Calabar in 2007; National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, UCTH Branch; Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria, UCTH Branch, among others, where she served in various capacities at different times. Dr Nja has attended many local and international conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars, where she made useful contributions. While working in the UCTH, Dr Nja served in many Ad-hoc Committees and in various capacities. She was a Member, Consultative Committee (Apex Policy Organ for the ENT School (2009-2016); Member, UCTH Education Governing Council (2009-2016); Chairman, Disciplinary Committee (2012) to investigate the case of habitual lateness to work by some staff members; Chairman, Disciplinary Committee (2016) to investigate the case of alleged theft in the hospital; Member, Panel of Investigation on the case of alleged Misconduct by some Staff Members (2007); Member, Investigation Committee on alleged Negligence to Duty and Ineptitude Levelled against the UCTH in 2011; Member, UCTH Board Chairman’s Outstanding Service Award Committee (2010) and many others. Dr Glory Nja has served as Consultant to many corporate organisations including the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria where she served as Accreditation Team Leader and Team Member; Member, Critique Workshop for Review of Curricula for General and Post Basic Nursing Programmes; Member, Ad-hoc Committee for Review of Training materials for Post Basic Nursing Programmes in Nigeria; many times Chief Examiner and Script Marker for Post-Basic ENT Nursing Programmes in Nigeria, among others. She also served as an Associate Consultant to Centre for Clinical Care and Clinical Research Nigeria in partnership with Catholic Relief Services, where she conducted a USAID funded study on Gender and HIV Stigma Analysis in Cross River State in 2020. Dr Glory Nja was appointed Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences Representative to the Institute of Education (2017-2019), Member, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences Research Committee (2018 to date); Chairman, Department of Public Health Postgraduate Committee and Examinations Officer (2016/2017 session); Member, Department of Public Health Ad-hoc Admissions Screening Committee (2017); and Member, Department of Public Health Ad-hoc Disciplinary Committee (2019 to date). Her competences include ability to work effectively for several uninterrupted hours to meet targets; excellent advocacy skills; skillful in project initiation / concept, project design and implementation, resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation of established programmes; good computer skills in MSW, PowerPoint, Excel and SPSS. Dr Nja is a Team player, result-oriented, with good leadership and mentorship skills. She also possesses excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively and collegially for the attainment of organizational goals. She is a recipient of many awards and grants. Her research interests are in the areas of quality improvement in school health and healthcare services, patient outcomes research, ENT health promotion and disease prevention, and HIV/AIDS and Gender-based violence (GBV). Dr (Mrs) Glory Mbe Egom Nja is happily married to Prof Mbe Egom Nja, and they are blessed with three children.
