The Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi has appointed Dr. Kingsley Akaba as Chairman Investigative Committee on the death of a Postgraduate Student.

The appointment conveyed in a letter signed by the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe and dated November 26, 2021, is sequel to a disturbing report received by the Vice Chancellor that a Postgraduate Student of the institution, Kebi Lesley Kebi, died from complications arising from a surgical operation carried out on him at the Unical Medical Centre.

According to the letter, the operation was allegedly carried out without a CT Scan to determine the nature of the treatment.

The committee’s terms of reference, according to the letter, include to investigate and unravel the immediate and remote causes of the patient’s death, to identify cases of unprofessional conduct and complacency of staff of the center in the management of the patient.

The terms of reference also mandated the committee to recommend measures that would forestall a reocurrence of similar situation in the future, to carry out any other duty incidental to the assignment.

The letter states that the committee is expected to submit its report to the University Management within one week from the date of appointment.
