Welcome to the web portal of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology, University of Calabar, Nigeria. Globally, we are recognized as lovers of life and nature as we thrive daily to understand, protect and preserve, thereby contributing to the sustenance of life and nature, while inquiring into their beneficial applications. You would find it fascinating as you crave to join our well-trained and committed team of professors and other senior academic staff as well as our rich brand of very caring technical and administrative staff to explore the beauty of nature, its endowments and metamorphosis. Our primary objective, therefore, is to train willing and able people of all gender, race and origin with a focus on ensuring environmental sustainability – wildlife conservation, species protection and preservation as well as in developing methods that support adequate research in a dynamic world. Also, to provide an environment of international standards for learning, research and acquisition of skills that would empower students to apply knowledge/skills to the benefits of the society, as well as to develop and always update a modern library to encourage research, learning and global interaction. 

 

Historically, the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology came into being in 2004/2005 academic session as a modification of the Department of Zoology, formerly Zoology Unit, Department of Biological Sciences, which originated within the Calabar campus of the then University of Nigeria, Nsukka, set up during the 1973/1974 academic session. After the establishment of the University of Calabar on October, 1975, the Department of Biological Sciences started operating within the Faculty of Science in the University of Calabar. 

 

Presently, the Department is headed by Dr. Eni George Eni, operating within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The Department thrives to provide educational and research opportunities for individuals in Zoology, Environmental Biology and other related natural science courses. Also, the Department provides service opportunities through dissemination and application of knowledge and skills as required in industries and Public services. To achieve these goals, the Department offers four (4) year undergraduate and postgraduate Programmes (2/3 Years M.Sc and 3/4 Years Ph.D). All these prepare students for careers in research, employment and entrepreneurship. During the period of training, students are exposed to basic Biology, Zoology and Environmental Biology in different areas of specialty in the Department.

History

The Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology came into being in 2004/2005 academic session as a modification of the Department of Zoology, formerly Zoology Unit, Department of Biological Sciences, which originated within the Calabar campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, set up during the 1973/1974 academic session. After establishment of the University of Calabar on October 1st 1975, the Department of Biological Sciences started operating within Faculty of Science in the University of Calabar. Presently, the HOD of the Department is Rev. Canon Dr. Eni George Eni, operating within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The Department thrives to provide educational and research opportunities for individuals in Zoology, Environmental Biology and other related natural science courses. Also the Department provide service opportunities through dissemination and application of knowledge and skills as required in industries and Public services. To achieve these goals, the Department offers a four (4) years Undergraduate and Post Graduate Programme (2/3 Years M.Sc and 3/4 Years Ph.D) prepare students for careers in research and employment. During the Period of training, students are exposed to basic Biology, Zoology and Environmental Biology in different areas of specialty of the Department such as: Parasitology: Parasitologists are responsible for giving expert advice on the various disease control programmes as well as carrying out research to find out factors responsible for the transmission of diseases prevention strategies. Entomology: Entomologist offer expert advice in Insect/Pest Control Programmes. They also offer expert advice in Criminal Investigation by using Insect succession on Cadava to establish time at which death occurred. Animal Physiology: They can offer expert advice on contraceptive technology an area in mammalian reproductive physiology. Environmental Pollution and Toxicology: The harmful effects of chemicals such as drugs and metals in our environments can be assessed by environmental scientist. Wildlife Management and Ecology: Their major focus is to encourage conservation of natural resources and species that are threatened. Fisheries and Aquaculture: Their major focus is serve as consultant to both private and governmental organization. They can also run individual farming system. Graduates from this Department have a lots of opportunities, degree in Zoology and Environmental Biology puts one in the fore-front for job in the sensitive area of Health, safety and  Environmental Management (HSE) Industries which automatically places the person ahead of his/her peers. A wide range of job opportunities are available to students who complete the undergraduate and Graduate Programme in the Department in the following areas: conservation, pest management, environmental impact assessment, parasitology, fisheries and aquaculture etc. the training will further enhance the ability of potential Graduate and post graduates to participate in Disease Control Programme such as National Onchocerciasis (NOCP), Nigeria Guinea worm eradication Programme (NIGEP), Rollback malaria, National Institute of Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) etc.
