Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Social Work

Welcome to the web portal of the Department of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. Social Work Department is one of the most renowned, highly academic, excellence driven, highly motivated and disciplined staff and practical based Department in the University. We are committed to a program of studies that is informed by a central concern for human rights, personal empowerment, community development, social change and social justice. The philosophy underlying both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in the solution of social problems and to make their contributions to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community, having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in the Field of Social Work Practice and Social Sciences in general and in the various subfields of Social Work. We are committed to the development of human capacity in collaboration with regional, national and global communities. Our primary objective is to provide our graduates with intellectual, practical and professional skills and knowledge rooted in progressive values that promote beneficial change. By acknowledging the holistic, interdisciplinary and activistic nature of social work and its commitment to social change, social justice, and human rights, we strive to provide a self-reflective balance between theory and practice; teaching and research; family and community service.  

The Department started as a Unit in the Department of Sociology in 1997 when it offered a degree program leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Social Work. It became a full-fledged and independent Department in 2017 after getting full accreditation from the National Universities Commission. The Department currently runs both undergraduate and Post-Graduate Programmes which includes: Bachelor of Science in Social Work; Postgraduate Diploma in Social Policy & Administration; Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work; Masters in Social Work; Master of Science in Social Work and Doctor of Philosophy in social work. Graduates of the Department can choose to be professionals in Child and School Social Work, Community Development & Project Management Service, Medical and Health Social Work, Health Management, Planning and Social Development, Industrial and Institutional Social Work, Correctional Services and Rehabilitation, Gerontology and Cultural Services, Social Policy & Social Welfare Administration, Family Social Work, and Disaster & Crisis Management.

Our approach is anchored on the multidisciplinary approach recommended by the International Federation of Social Workers, National Association of Social Workers and Nigeria Association of Social Work Educators. In addition to our highly trained, equipped and motivated team of academics and non-academic staff led by four professors and one associate professor, are cream of administrative and technical staff, experts from other related disciplines who are also engaged to enrich our curriculum and practices. All of these have made our graduates be highly sought after for excellent job positions including educational and research institutions, government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and industries.

Mission

Philosophy

Objective

The major aims and objectives of a degree in Social Work are to:

i.    Instill in students a sound knowledge of Social Work, an appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural contexts and to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society and the functions of social work

ii. Provide students with broad and well-balanced knowledge of Social Work theories and methods.

iii. Cultivate in students the ability to apply their social work knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of growing societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere.

iv. Provide students with relevant knowledge and skills from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of social work or multi-disciplinary areas involving social work.

v. Instill in students an appreciation of the importance of social work in socio cultural, legal, economic, political, industrial and environmental contexts.

vi. Develop in students a range of useful competencies for public, private or self employment in the fields of social development.

 

C. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME ARE AS FOLLOW

i. Provide an integrated curriculum based on the purpose social work and the knowledge, values, ethics and necessary for entry-level into social work practice.

ii. Provide an educational experience that facilitates critical thinking and analysis of social work knowledge and practice.

iii. Provide a learning environment that promotes culturally sensitive practice and encourages self-reflection, information literacy, life-long learning and prepare students for professional growth and development.
