The Department of Petroleum Engineering warmly welcomes you to its web portal. The Department is strategically positioned to take our students through the principles of modern engineering designs and applications, with special focus in petroleum engineering and the environment. The Department started academic programs in 2016/2017 academic session. We encourage you to go through the different pages in our web portal and find out more information about our academic programs, staffing, research, courses, and other activities.  

Man-power requirement and knowledge assimilation are still the burning issues that need to be addressed in the oil and gas industries globally. According to the British geological survey of 2017, Petroleum still account for about 70 percent of the global energy mix with huge improvement in gas utilization. The production and utilization indices confirm the relevance of oil and gas in today’s world, despite all efforts to substitute fossil fuel with alternative energy sources.

Historically, petroleum exploration in Nigeria is dated back to 1908 when the first team of experts began the search for oil. A breakthrough was officially announced in 1956 and oil was eventually produced in 1959 by the British Petroleum (BP) in Oloibiri in today’s Bayelsa State. For over 60 years since the discovery of petroleum in Nigeria, professionals in the oil and gas sector have been working assiduously to enhance reservoir characterization, formation evaluation, environmental protection, fluid recovery and transport methods.

The Department is a young and vibrant. It is highly positioned to expose our dear students to both theoretical and practical knowledge of activities in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the petroleum industry. This will enable students to learn, gain knowledge through teaching and research and therefore, develop skills and enriching experience in all aspects of the petroleum industrial activities including drilling engineering, reservoir management, recovery mechanisms, fluid transport, gas engineering and environmental management. The experience gained will make them to be outstanding in a highly competitive industry. In addition, they are abundantly exposed to diversification processes in the gas energy resource and utilizations that are supplement to current energy sourcing from crude oil. We have developed a robust and Our courses and curricula are market-driven and We have a robust plan to update our curriculum periodically to match up societal needs.

The Department has a team of highly experienced and committed team of academic, administrative and technical staff, many of whom have several years of cognate experience in different fields of the oil and gas sector. These staff are spread across the six fields of specialisations that include

Mission

The Department of Petroleum Engineering provides a conducive environment for research, teaching, learning, and development. Learning at international standards and taking into consideration the need for wealth creation for national development.


Vision

The Department of Petroleum Engineering seeks to produce the best manpower in petroleum engineering necessary for national wealth creation, human development, and technological advancement using the basic knowledge acquired in the arts of teaching and learning.


Philosophy

 

The courses and curriculum of the B. Eng. degree program of the Department of Petroleum Engineering is very important to the industry and society. They seek to improve the quality of life by providing knowledge and expertise in the areas of petroleum exploration, exploitation, and production. Petroleum Engineering involves the practical application of the basic science of chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology, and all the engineering science, to the technology of economically developing and producing (recovering) subterranean reservoirs of oil, gas, steam, and hot water and designing underground waste disposal facilities as well as the field processing of oil and gas. Therefore, the services of petroleum engineers are required to explore, discover, and produce oil and gas to meet energy needs, as well as provide feedstock for a wide spectrum of industries, such as petrochemicals, chemicals, plastics, manufacturing, etc. Petroleum Engineers have established careers in fields such as drilling, well completion and production engineering, reservoir engineering, natural gas operation, research and development, and environmental control. A petroleum engineering background is also excellent preparation for the engineering of underground wastewater disposal, management careers with oil, gas, and geothermal companies; petroleum marketing oil and gas attorneys; and oil and gas investment counseling. The role of the petroleum engineer is economic; his job is to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of petroleum from a reservoir. The Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calabar is going to be one of the best in the country, recognized for its excellent curriculum.


Objective

The main objective of a B. Eng. degree in Petroleum Engineering is to produce the best engineers who are capable of meeting all challenges of the Nigerian petroleum industries and those of the socio-economic sector. The specific objectives to achieve this aim include:

-   Giving to students the knowledge of the basic principles which could be developed into skill geared toward technological advancement.

-  Giving the students basic knowledge for planning, designing, operating, managing, and maintaining the respective industrial outfits in Nigeria and the world at large.

-    Giving the students the knowledge of modelling and simulation for stimulation and motivation of every student in the higher standard and achievements pursuits in general technology through experimental/industrial research or higher educational and professional pursuits.

-   The graduates are expected to have carrier opportunities in petroleum refineries, industries (involving exploration, reservoirs, drilling, production, servicing, transporting, promotion, and marketing of the products).

History

The Department of Petroleum Engineering, University of Calabar, started in the 2016/2017 academic year. It took off along with six other Departments when the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was approved to begin academic programs in the University by the University of Calabar Senate. It was temporarily accommodated in the Department of Physics pending the completion of the Faculty of Engineering Complex that was then under construction. The Department has since moved into the permanent site and is now operating from there.
