Department of Mechanical Engineering

Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Mechanical Engineering

Welcome to the web portal of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calabar. The Department came into being in the 2016/2017 academic year when the Senate of the University of Calabar approved the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology with five other departments in the faculty. In the Mechanical Engineering Department, we train students to become professionals which will make critical decisions that will lead to the success of many enterprises including power generation and distribution, communication systems, transportation, manufacturing, industrial processes, infrastructure and economic development.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum at the University of Calabar is designed to make students have a sound foundation in areas of applied sciences and mathematical analysis that are crucial to their understanding and appreciation of core engineering processes and state-of-the-art technologies. Upon evidence of grasp of these foundational courses, we train them on how to think and consequently, develop their creative capacities and apply them in solving technological problems in society. The department imparts the relevant knowledge and emphasizes the acquisition of innovative, creative and problem-solving skills by students. Students also gain experience in the engineering design process, the unique engineering activity that requires creative synthesis as well as analysis to fulfill specified needs. Attention is also focused on the continuous improvement and development of staff and students in emerging engineering trends that will reflect the changing needs in society.

The Mechanical Engineering degree programme at the University of Calabar is intended to inspire and raise the creative capabilities of students, thereby promoting the exploration and transformation of indigenous resources into useful products and services following best and acceptable global standards while promoting sustainability and studying existing technologies. This implies a pragmatic approach in solving engineering problems and satisfying the requirements of man.

The concentration in Mechanical Engineering is structured for a diversity of educational and professional objectives. For students who are planning to work as practicing engineers or who may be preparing for careers in business, education, government, or law—and for those whose career objectives may be less specific—the concentration provides an ideal framework for a well-rounded technical, entrepreneurial and scientific education.

Mission

The Department of Mechanical Engineering provides high quality, relevant engineering education, innovative research, skills and attitudes that will permit her students to succeed as engineers and leaders in the society constantly meeting with intellectual, ethical and career challenges.

Vision

The Department of Mechanical Engineering strives to graduate mechanical engineers with the highest quality in education, innovation and state-of-the-art research, constantly satisfying the ever dynamic engineering demands and global needs.

Philosophy

Engineers apply the relevant knowledge from sciences to obtain technologies which are useful and satisfy desired needs in the society. The Mechanical Engineering degree through various relevant knowledge emphasizes the acquisition of innovative, creative and problem-solving skills by students in the programme. Attention is also focused on continuous improvement and development of staff and students in emerging research and engineering trends that will reflect the changing needs in the society.

The programme is intended to inspire and raise the creative capabilities of students, thereby promoting the exploration and transformation of indigenous resources into useful products and services in accordance with best and acceptable global standards while promoting sustainability and studying existing technologies.

Objective

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Calabar seeks to produce high quality engineers who are capable of promoting indigenous technology through:

i.          Imparting high quality education with constant improvements in teaching methodologies, innovative curricula and enhancing students’ skills to enable them become globally competitive engineers.

ii.         Acquiring and maintaining state of the art production and research facilities that promotes technology transfer and continuous improvement for staff and student, in line with emerging local and global engineering trends.

iii.        Developing and maintaining alliances with manufacturing industries, engineering service providers, research for development organizations in Nigeria to provide opportunities for staff and students to integrate and solve engineering problems through hands-on experiences.

iv.        Providing students with conducive academic environment of excellence, leadership, entrepreneurial, innovative and ethical guidelines needed for a productive career.

v.         Giving students the opportunity to explore and carry out team based quality researches which promotes the sustainability and domestication of engineering manufacture using indigenous technology means, methods and materials.

History

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Calabar, took off in the 2016/2017 academic year alongside five other departments when the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in the University. Engr. Prof. A. I. Menkiti was the pioneer Acting Dean of the faculty, Engr. Dr. C. A. Udie was the pioneer acting Sub-dean of the faculty, and Engr. P. A. Ubi the pioneer head/acting coordinator of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The department was accommodated temporarily in the Department of Physics pending the completion of the Engineering Complex that was then under construction. Pioneer lecturers in the department are Engr. Remigus A. Umunnah and Engr. Paschal A. Ubi (pioneer Head of Department).
