Department of Mathematics

Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Mathematics

On behalf of all staff and students in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Calabar, Calabar, I welcome and thank you for visiting our website. Here you will find information about our activities and programmes. Department of Mathematics is one of the pioneer departments in the University, dating back to the days when the University was a campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and till today, has continued to play a prominent role in the promotion of its teaching, research and outreach programmes of the University.

The Department is very vibrant and it offers a good number of outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate programme that leads to the award of B. Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Mathematics/Statistics (first degree only) and varying areas of specialization. The Department also runs services courses for non-mathematics students in the entire University. Our students have the freedom to choose their areas of specialization from either the traditional theoretical mathematics courses or from the diverse areas of its application- mathematics everywhere. Besides experiences gained in the classroom, our students have the opportunity to acquire additional experiences from direct participation in researches conducted within the department or even beyond. The Applied Mathematics students are trained on how to use mathematical tools in solving physical problems.

 The Department has a seasoned team of highly experienced academic, technical and administrative staff who have a deep commitment to teach, train and help students acquire lifelong experience and develop skills in both areas of theoretical and applied mathematics. Experiences that our students develop while in the Department have made them highly successful in their various places of assignment.

If you need further information or have any feedback, comments and suggestions, please send them to us using any of our contact channels.

Welcome to the home of the forerunners of both ancient and modern technology.

Mission / Vision / Philosophy / Objective

To Produce high quality graduates and scholars in focal areas of learning with theoretical,practical and entepreneurial skills for the world of work in conducive environment through quality research and teaching.

To be a centre of excellence producing globally competitive graduates and contributing significantly to development through research.

Recent developmental trend in Nigeria is pointing towards rigorous approach in solutions to problems. This requires manpower that is familiar with modern concepts and methods of correct reasoning and proofs in their respective disciplines. The techniques and methodology of mathematics in modeling real world problems with abstract structures and entities treated with the rigor of mathematics   are   central   to   the   development of the country. The programme content is structured accordingly to train personnel who will facilitate the growth of the country’s economy.

The objectives of B.Sc. (Mathematics/Statistics) degree programme are to:

(i)    Encourage the study and learning of mathematical sciences as an entity;

(ii)   Produce graduates who are skillfully equipped to pursue careers/further studies in Mathematics, Statistics or multidisciplinary areas involving Mathematics, statistics or both;

(iii)               Introduce students to modern concepts and methods of proof, the study of abstract structures and search for mathematical entities and operations which represent aspects of the real world.

(iv)               Introduce students to the science and methodology of mathematical models and develop in the students the basic skills in the application of the models;

(v)                Prepare graduates to enter the vocational fields of teaching, research or careers in industry, management, government or actuarial science.

The Department of Mathematics/Statistics came into existence as a full Department in September 1976.  Between October 1973 and August 1976, it was known as the Sub-Department of Mathematics/Statistics, University of Nigeria, Calabar Campus.  The Sub-Department started in 1973 with student enrolment of 14.  This pioneer group was transferred to Nsukka Campus of the University of Nigeria in January 1976 because of the poor staffing position in the then Sub-Department.  In September 1976, the Department admitted its first set of students who then joined the remaining two sets (1974/75 and 1975/76) of the Calabar Campus of the University of Nigeria. In 1996, the Computer science unit was created to award B.Sc. degree in Computer Science. The Dept then became – Dept of Mathematics/Statistics and Computer Science.  In 2010 the Statistics unit was created to award B.Sc. in Statistics.  This name was retained but in August 2014, the University Senate approved the splitting of the Department of Mathematics/Statistics and Computer Science into three new Departments of: Dept of Mathematics; Dept of Computer Science; and Dept of Statistics.

The Department of Mathematics is still running the B.Sc. Mathematics/Statistics programme.

Accommodation:  The Department moved from the Duke Town Campus into its present location in October, 1990.
