There is the urgent need in Nigeria today for the development of undergraduate, postgraduate and in-service trainees in the field of marketing. This need is self-evident when one reads advertisements for marketers in our daily newspapers, company magazines and journals of both profit and non-profit organizations. Indeed, the Nigerian economy has picked up steadily such that the need for professionals in this field has become very critical. Marketing is the organizational function responsible for the creation of customer value by developing, pricing, distributing, and promoting products, services, and ideas. Everything in business starts with marketing, and a successful career in marketing starts at University of Calabar. Our department is widely acclaimed for its scholarly expertise in a variety of areas including consumer psychology, marketing strategy, marketing analytics, behavioral pricing, corporate social responsibility, and marketing communications. The Department of Marketing in the Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Calabar has risen to this challenge by offering a three-year and a four-year (regular) and a four-year and a five-year (evening) undergraduate degree programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing. At the post graduate level, the Department offers programmes leading to Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Degrees in Marketing. The programmes which are based on the philosophy of broad-based education in marketing cover inter-disciplinary subjects and rely heavily on the social sciences, and other disciplines relevant to management. The central focus of the Department of Marketing programmes is on problem solving, opportunity identification, and decision making in marketing. To accomplish this, a student of Marketing is exposed to the theoretical and practical knowledge which will equip him/her with the necessary tools to face the challenges of a competitive marketing economy. Emphases are placed on self-reliance and self-employment to enable graduates from the programme contribute to national development and have fulfilling professional career.
