Marketing is a profession that uses innovative techniques to bring the latest products and services to the doorsteps of all consumers and consequently, affects everyone in the world. To us in the Department of marketing, the survival of every business venture depends on the strength of its marketing strategies, and a successful career in marketing starts at the University of Calabar, where we have been occupying the top position in many programs ranking schemes in Nigeria.

In our Department of Marketing, students are adequately exposed to the rigor of both theoretical and highly challenging practical situations to enable them to acquire enough experience needed to transform them into accomplished professional marketers equipped with competency to identify marketing opportunities, solve problems and make infallible decisions in a highly competitive marketing environment. Our Department is widely known for its rare accumulation of marketing professionals in various fields of expertise including consumer psychology, marketing strategy, marketing analytics, behavioral pricing, corporate social responsibility, and marketing communications. Thus, we have a cream of a highly experienced team of academic, administrative, and technical staff, who are deeply committed to teaching and exposing students to challenging marketing situations needed to enable them to acquire lifelong experience. Our Departmental Alumni record is laced with the identities of highly accomplished and successful marketers, who are either occupying enviable marketing positions in multinational and local organizations or private practice.

The Department runs programs that lead to the award of B. Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Marketing. We have developed rich curricula and retinue of courses needed to meet the challenges of a highly dynamic marketing situation. Our admission process is flexible and students can choose to study either on regular (three years for students admitted by direct entry or four years for students admitted through the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination mode) or part-time (evening) -a five-year undergraduate degree program. At the post-graduate level, the Department offers programs leading to Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Marketing. The programs which are based on the philosophy of broad-based education in marketing cover inter-disciplinary subjects and rely heavily on the social sciences, and other disciplines relevant to management.

Mission

To produce high quality graduates and scholars to be useful academics, public intellectuals and professionals with theoretical, practical and entrepreneurial skills that would effectively and efficiently contribute to improve the economic and social wellbeing of Nigerian citizens in particular and the world in general, through teaching, research and community service.

History

The Department of Marketing commenced as one of the four areas of specializations in the Department of Management Studies in 1977.  The Senate of the University approved the award of separate degrees in the four areas including Marketing in 1987.  Following that approval, and the recommendation of the NUC accreditation team which also supported the creation of four separate departments, the Department of Marketing was created in 1988.  The first Post Graduate Programme of the Department was the Doctoral Programme in marketing which started in 2002. The M.Sc  Programme started later in 2007 as a result of the revised NUC admission requirement into the Ph.D program, which made it the basic entry qualification as against the MBA.
