We are happy to welcome and thank you for visiting the web page of the Department of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Calabar. We have carefully packaged information about our programs and activities including our professional training programs that are directed at training and encouraging students to learn, acquire knowledge and skills, and develop lifelong experiences on everything concerning Library and Information Sciences including principles of information generation, management, and usage. All our programs are student-friendly with academic, administrative, and technical structures including Faculty and Departmental academic advisers and other support services directed at helping students make their academic pursuit successful and memorable.
Our Department has a very high level of expertise and competence in the core areas of Library and Information Science curriculum and research in Nigeria. We have packaged an excellent course curriculum that leads to the award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in various areas of Library and Information Sciences. The educational, motivational, and research activities in the Department are powered by a dedicated team of highly experienced academic, administrative and technical staff with different areas of specializations in Library and Information Sciences. Our team utilizes both traditional and contemporary procedures in teaching and motivating students to learn, acquire practical knowledge and skills, and consequently, develop an enriching experience that has made them outstanding in serving society. The strength of the Department lies in its rich and highly accomplished Alumni members, who are successfully managing rewarding job positions in many local and international organizations including teaching, research and government, and policy-making bodies.

The Library and Information Science unit started in 1994 in the then Department of Educational Foundations and Administration, later the Department of Educational Foundations, Guidance and Counselling. The National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Panel visited University of Calabar and Library and Information Science Unit, and The Library and Information Science, BLIS Programme was given full accreditation in 2008. The Department of Library and Information Science emerged from the Department of Educational Foundations, Guidance and Counseling following the pronouncement of the Senate during her meeting of 5th April, 2012 to exist as a substantive department from 2011/2012 Academic session, under the Faculty of Education.
The Department is administered by the Head of Department in conjunction with the Departmental Board. Membership of the departmental board consists of all Lecturers in the Department. The Departmental Board is the general policy making body subject to the authority of the Faculty of Education Board and the Senate. It deals with all matters of general interest to staff and students. There are also Academic Staff who have graduate teaching responsibilities.
There are Academic Advisers who handle students’ academic and personal problems, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Besides there is a Staff Adviser for undergraduate Departmental Students’ Association. All matters for the consideration of the Graduate school, University Senate or the Vice-Chancellor must be routed through the Head of Department and Dean of Education
