Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Fisheries And Aquaculture

 

Welcome to the web portal of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the University of Calabar, Nigeria, where we are increasingly recognized globally as the Blue Ambassadors of our Planet. Our primary objective is to produce skilled manpower in fisheries that will not be job creators and employer of labor but also serve as a source of knowledge in Fishery Industries; to train experts that will help in solving the protein needs of the populace through aquacultural activities and to train and provide manpower to both local and multinational organizations [n the various areas of marine technology, fish food and feed production and research. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture originated from the Institute of Oceanography of the the University of Calabar in 2003.

 

The Department runs programs that lead to the award of B. Agriculture in Fisheries and Aquaculture, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Fisheries and Aquaculture by the University of Calabar. Graduates from the Department shall have deep engagements in marine fish production for the needs of the population. Private fish farms and hatcheries provide added opportunities for a profitable and rewarding engagement of graduates of the program. Employment opportunities also exist in relevant Ministries, Departments, Non-Governmental Organisations, international organizations like the Food and Agricultural Organisation, World Health Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development, United Nations Development Programme and so on, and environmental protection agencies. Furthermore, graduates of the program are generically entrepreneurs who do not only create jobs but employers of labor.

 

The Department has a highly trained and motivated team of teaching and non-teaching staff lead by five professors, one senior lecturer and other lower cadre staff, and cream of dedicated administrative and technical staff. in addition, experts from other related disciplines are also engaged to enrich our curriculum and practices. This has made our graduates are highly sought after for excellent job positions including international organizations like the Food and Agricultural Organisation, World Health Organisation, International Food for Agricultural Development and United Nations Development Programme, government agencies and industries.

Mission

The mission of B. Agriculture in Fisheries and Aquaculture programme is to provide students with improved knowledge of basic principles of Fisheries and Aquaculture and to keep them abreast of recent improved techniques of fisheries, aquaculture and environmental management. It is also the mission of the programme to conduct research in critical areas such as fish disease, breeding, nutrition, harvesting among others.


Vision

The vision of the B. Agriculture in Fisheries and Aquaculture programme is to constitute a formidable base for improved study of Fisheries and Aquaculture through effective teaching, research and collaborative research networking to prepare students with interest to take up fish production as a career in addition to their academic pursuit.


Philosophy

Students will be exposed to different interrelated fields of ocean sciences and techniques. The major thrust of their training is to understand the complexities of the ocean environment in all its ramifications and the value of multidisciplinary approach in proffering solutions to a wide range of issues in ocean environmental and resource management and conservation. Graduates of the programme will be assets to national and international establishments with interest in the ocean environment, especially resource exploration and exploitation, regulatory and monitoring, research and teaching as well as defense and strategic planning.
