On behalf of all members of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the University of Calabar, we sincerely welcome you for visiting and invite you to explore what we have in our department. Our department, which started academic activities in 2018, is young and vibrant. Its course curriculum is designed to make students creative, innovative, dynamic, and entrepreneurial to meet the needs and challenges that require Civil Engineering solutions in Nigeria and beyond. Our students are taught to acquire fundamental knowledge, right attitudes, develop skills and in the process, acquire enriching experiences necessary for successful professional practice and service to humanity. We have a team of committed and highly experienced academic, technical and administrative staff, who are always available to teach, mentor, and share their hard-earned experiences with students. Our team of carefully selected academic and technical staff members is dedicated to providing innovative and high-quality teaching in various areas of specialization in Civil and Environmental Engineering including structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental (or public health), water resources/hydraulic, materials and construction, and construction project management.
We have a strong but diverse research team that is deeply focused on providing affordable civil engineering solutions to our society and the environment. Our laboratories and workshops are built with the latest engineering design. Our graduates can choose to specialize in any of the diverse areas of specializations available in the Department. We are very proud of the progress, achievements, and accomplishments recorded in the young department so far and even more excited about the future.

To be the leading Civil and Environmental engineering department in Nigeria and among the highly ranked departments in the world in terms of teaching we quality and content, applied research, new ideas and innovations, consultancy, academic leadership and manpower training.
The philosophy underlying the Civil and Environmental Engineering programme in University of Calabar is to develop and advance the science and practice of Civil and Environmental Technology in Nigeria in particular and the whole world in general.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Calabar seeks to produce high quality engineers who are capable of promoting indigenous technology through:
✓ To produce graduates who will function efficiently in public services and industries in the various functions of civil and environmental engineers.
✓ To produce graduates engineers with sufficient training in aspect of civil and environmental engineering that poses challenges to our national economy.
✓ To solve innovative academic and practical problems faced by industry in a developing economy.
✓ To produce high caliber of graduates that would enter the teaching or academic profession.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Calabar, took off in the 2016/2017 academic year alongside five other departments when the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in the University. Engr. Prof. Alex Ifeanyi Menkiti was the pioneer Acting Dean of the faculty, Engr. Dr. C. A. Udie was the pioneer acting Sub-dean of the faculty, and Engr. Edward Ingio Adah the pioneer head/acting coordinator of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, under the visionary leader, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Zana Itiunbe Akpagu and his senate. The Department was accommodated temporarily in the Department of Physics pending the completion of the Engineering Complex that was then under construction.
