About Dr. Bernadine Nsa Ekpenyong

Dr. Bernadine Nsa Ekpenyong is an academic, editor and a researcher with a wealth of experiences in teaching, conducting and supervising research. She has a background and specialization in Optometry and Public Health Epidemiology with a focus on quantitative research and bio-statistics. Dr. Ekpenyong has about twenty-five years of cognate experience in Optometry, inclusive of fifteen years in the field of Public Health as an epidemiologist and a senior lecturer in the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar. She started my academic career as a Lecturer ll in the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Calabar in 1997, before she was transferred to the Department of Public Health, UNICAL in 2012. She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2016. Dr Ekpenyong was awarded a Doctor of Optometry degree by the Abia State University, Uturu, Nigeria in 1994, M.PH and PhD degrees (Public Health Epidemiology) by the University of Calabar in 2005 and 2016 respectively. Her main areas of research include school eye health/school health programmes, community health, epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases, epidemiology of health-related events, reproductive health, maternal and child health, health services management, public health, environmental health, nutrition, health education and promotion, optometry, sociology of diseases, biostatistics and environmental epidemiology. She is presently a fellow of the Nigeria Post Graduate College of Optometry and candidate fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. During her service year in the National Youth Service Corp, she worn the Cross River State Governor’s award for best Youth Corps member for her contributions towards the improvement of the lives of people, which also motivated her to venture into Public Health. As a researcher, she has been accorded a number of awards and grants both locally and abroad as principal investigator and co-investigator. Her Ph.D. research proposal attracted funding from the African Vision Research Institute (AVRI) South Africa, while the Tertiary University Education Trust Fund funded her fellowship research proposal for the award of fellow of the Nigerian College of Optometrists. In addition to the above, she has successfully supervised six master’s degree thesis. In her many years as a researcher, she has developed a wealth of leadership skills working in different positions which have been vital to the success of her projects and endeavours. Dr. Ekpenyong has served as examinations officer in the Department of Ophthalmology and Public Health. She was appointed Chairman, Department of Public Health Post Graduate Committee in 2017. She is presently serving the Nigerian Post Graduate College of Optometrists as Chair of the Faculty of Public Health Optometry. Dr. Ekpenyong also occupy the position of the new Coordinator of Center for Human Resources for Health Management Training at the University of Calabar. As the current Chairman of the Public Health Optometry Committee of the Nigerian Optometric Association, she initiated and led the first national eye survey conducted by the Nigerian Optometric Association on drivers’ vision. Over three thousand five hundred commercial and private vehicle drivers were examined in 2016. Dr Ekpenyong was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Nigerian Optometric Association in 2016. Dr Nsa Ekpenyong has attended many local and international conferences where she made presentation. She has published over twenty articles in peer reviewed academic journals in her field. Dr Nsa Ekpenyong is happily married with three children.
