About Dr. Augusta Chinyere Nsonwu-Anyanwu

Dr Augusta Chinyere Nsonwu-Anyanwu is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, College of Medical sciences, University of Calabar. She joined the services of the University in 2001 as Graduate Assistant and was promoted to the rank of the Senior Lecturer in 2016. She holds a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS, Chemical Pathology) degree obtained from the University of Calabar in 1998, Master of Science degree (M.Sc, Chemical Pathology) from same University (2005) and a Ph.D degree in Basic Medical Sciences (Chemical Pathology/Immunology specialty) from University of Ibadan, Nigeria (2012). She also has a Certificate in Immunolgy from University of Ibadan/Institute of Immunology Luxembourg, Germany. Dr Nsonwu-Anyanwu has been teaching, researching, mentoring and rendering community services since she joined the University. She has successfully supervised and, in some cases, co-supervised over five graduate and several undergraduate students. Dr Nsonwu-Anyanwu has successfully published over forty articles in reputable peer reviewed local and international journals. She has served as examination officer and Co-ordinator of Chemical Pathology Unit in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Calabar and is currently the Chairman of Nigerian Cancer Society, Cross River State Chapter. Dr. Nsonwu-Anyanwu is an Immuno-Toxicologist. She has studied the interactions between hormones, oxidative stress indices and cytokines in tubal infertility, impact of HIV infection, malaria, diabetes, lifestyle factors and occupational exposures to some environmental chemicals on biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation. Her current research focus is on investigation of the role of environment, genetics, nutrition, lifestyle and occupation in the development of cancers in human populations and how best to implement prevention. She has over a decade’s worth of experience in the conduct and execution of basic research. She has presented some of her research findings in local and international workshops, seminars, symposia and conferences. Dr Augusta Chinyere Nsonwu-Anyanwu is a recipient of several awards including the Organization for Women in Science in Developing Countries (OWSD) Doctoral Fellowship award in collaboration with Chinese Academy of Science Shangai, China, OWSD Travel Grant Award, Kuwait, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Fellowship Award, Washington DC, UICC World Cancer Congress Travel Grant Award, Paris France, third world academy of science (TWAS/NXT) BioVision Travel Scholarship award, Alexandria Egypt, European federation of clinical chemistry/International federation of clinical chemistry (EFCC/IFCC) Euromedlab Travel Scholarship award Innsbruck, Austria, International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX)/Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries (CTDC10) Travel Award, Belgrade Serbia, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Travel Awards, Whistler, Canada 2018 and University of Cape town Infectious Diseases in Africa (IDA) travel scholarship award, 2019.
