About Dr. Atana Uket Ewa

Dr. Atana Uket Ewa is an Associate Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Calabar and a Chief Consultant Paediatrician in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar in Cross River State, Nigeria. She specializes in Paediatric Respiratory/Infectious Diseases with special interests in Tuberculosis, HIV infections, Asthma, Pneumonia, among others. Her research interests are Paediatric Respiratory and Infectious Diseases. She was born in Calabar over 50 years ago and attended the Primary School No. 1, Mayne Avenue, Calabar, where she obtained the First School Leaving Certificate in 1978. Thereafter, she proceeded to the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri and obtained the West African School Certificate and General Certificate in Education O’ Level in 1983. She attended the University of Calabar between 1983 and 1989 and obtained a bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) degree in 1989. She thereafter received her Paediatrics training and experience from the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos (1992-1995), Tygerberg and Baragwanath hospitals both in South Africa (1995-1996), Tawam Hospital, United Arab Emirates (1996-1998) and finally the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar (2001-2003). She obtained her Fellowship in Paediatrics from the West African College of Physicians, (FWACPaed) in October 2002. She is an enthusiastic and highly motivated person, keenly interested in Paediatrics and very passionate about the well-being of children and their parents, with thirty-two years of clinical and teaching experience at home and abroad. She is reliable, very dependable and easy to work with and enjoys teaching and mentoring students of all cadres at any given opportunity. She also enjoys counseling and training children of various age groups, youths, women and men groups on various health prevention and promotion issues. Apart from her Fellowship, she is also a member of various National, Regional and International professional bodies. She has also been involved with non-governmental organizations geared towards helping less privileged and hard-to-reach populations of children and their parents. She has a passion for community outreaches and community based studies where a large population of clients can be reached in one intervention. She is happily married to Dr. Uket Eko Ewa and they are blessed with 4 wonderful children- Kokei, Wofai, Dodeye and Efaemiode.
