About Prof. Ajake Anim Obongha

Professor Anim Obongha Ajake is the 3rd and 1st elected Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Professor of Conservation Biogeography and Ecotourism at the University of Calabar. Prof. Ajake started his teaching career at the College of Agriculture, Obubra, Cross River State in 1994, and later, transferred his services to the University of Calabar upon obtaining a higher degree in 2000. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to the zenith of his career (professor) by dint of hard work, diligence, and dedication in 2016. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Management awarded by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2008. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in Geography and M.Sc. degree in Environmental Resources Planning degrees from the University of Uyo (1992) and the University of Calabar (1998) respectively. Within the period of his career progression, Prof. Ajake has held several positions of responsibility in the University including Programme Coordinator, Diploma and Degree in Environmental Education (2001-2005); Programme Coordinator, Environmental Protection and Management (2010-2013); and Head of Department, Geography and Environmental Science (2013-2015). He has also served the University in other capacities such as examinations officer in Environmental Education; Fieldwork Coordinator; Member, University Committee on Illegal Structures and Business Operation (2010-2013); Member, University Curriculum Review Committee (2018); Chairman, Accreditation Committee of Geography and Environmental Science for several years; Chairman, Faculty of Environmental Sciences Resource Verification Committee; Chairman, Faculty of Social Sciences Environmental Sanitation Committee (2010 – 2015); Chairman, Faculty of Social Sciences Infrastructure Committee (2015-2018); and several other positions at the Department and Faculty levels. During his tenure as Head of Department, he initiated the creation of the Bachelor of Science Degree Programme in Tourism Studies and was approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar and NUC in 2018. Through his ingenuity and as Head of Department the proposal for the establishment of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences was made, and it was graciously approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar in 2018. The faculty later got NUC recognition after resource verification of the four new Departments in 2020. He also served as a member of the National University Commission Curriculum Review Committee for fourteen disciplines offered across Nigerian Universities. In 2020, he was appointed by NUC to serve as a resource person for the Finalization of the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for Environmental Standards under the auspices of the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement. Prof. Ajake served a one-year sabbatical leave appointment at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and is an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate (M.Sc. & Ph.D.) programs of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also an external examiner and assessor to three Colleges of Education; namely, Cross River College of Education, Akamkpa; Federal College of Education, Obudu; and College of Education, Katsina Ala. Prof. Ajake has more than eighty publications to his credit comprising journal articles, conference proceedings, and technical reports. He is committed to teaching and supervision students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has successfully graduated 18 doctorate degrees and over 15 master's degree students. He is a member of several learned societies and associations including the Association of Nigerian Geographers, Nigeria Environmental Society, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Society for Occupational Safety and Environmental Health, Curriculum Organization of Nigeria among others. He is a beneficiary of several scholarships and awards including the Cross River State Government Scholarship for first-degree program (1989 – 1992), Federal Government of Nigeria for higher degree program (1996 – 1998), and many others. His current research focus is Biogeography, Forest Resource Management, Ecotourism, and Gender Studies. Prof. Ajake was elected Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences in 2021. He is happily married with four lovely kids.
