About Dr. Mathias Akpanyia Oshie

Dr Mathias Akpanyia Oshie is an indigene of Bakuriku-Bumaji, in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. He was born on the 10th of November, 1966, to the family of Late Oshie Osia-Ipuia, also of Bakuriku-Bumaji, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. The last of three surviving children of his parents, Mathias grew up under the single parenthood of his mother, Deaconess Alice Ejia Osia, having lost his father barely three months after he was born. He grew up spending most of his life living in Assemblies of God Church parsonages where his mother, a devout believer in the Christian faith hoped subtly that one day Mathias will answer a ministerial call. Growing up was herculean as Mathias had to work in the farms at a very tender age to support his ageing mother. He attended St. Augustine Primary School, Bumaji and later Velos Secondary Commercial School, Ikom, where he passed out in 1984. It was not possible for him to proceed immediately to any institution of higher learning as the family could not afford such at the time. He, however, enrolled on the Federal College of Education, Obudu, where he obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1991. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Linguistics from the University of Calabar in 1997. His quest for higher education took him to the University of Uyo where he obtained a PGDMC and a master’s degree in Mass Communication, in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Mathias presently holds a Ph.D in Mass Communication from Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. He has taught English Language and literature in English across public and private secondary schools in the state. He was an intern with CRBC, a state radio and television station where he featured prominently in the corporation’s evening news programme, “Across the state” in 2000 and 2001. He later joined the Cross River State Secondary Education Board as a Public Relations Officer in 2010, a position he occupied until September 2012, when he moved to join the academic staff slot of the University of Calabar. Mathias Oshie is a prolific scholar with a deep interest in communication and language-related areas. He had served the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies, the University of Calabar as Examination Officer, Project Coordinator and a Faculty of Arts representative to the Department of Oceanography. He was among the first batch of staff who were redeployed to form the department of mass communication in 2017. Mathias is married with children.
