About Dr. Obinna Chukwuemeka Godfrey

Dr. Obinna Chukwuemeka Godfrey is from Umuosu Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North L.G.A. of Abia State, Nigeria. He was born on 28th July 1985. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) Abia State, Nigeria with second-class honours in 2008 and did his mandatory NYSC in Taraba State, in 2009. In 2012, he proceeded to his M.Sc degree in Biochemical Toxicology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU, Umudike and graduated with a distinction in 2014. He also obtained his PhD in Biochemical Toxicology with a distinction from MOUAU in 2019. He started his teaching career in 2014 as a part-time biochemistry lecturer at the Temple Gate Polytechnic Aba, Abia State, Nigeria and later joined the University of Calabar in 2019 as a full-time permanent staff where he is currently a Lecturer II in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. His goal is to impart knowledge and morals to students and get them acquainted with what constitutes the internal body system which has enormous metabolic processes including energy generation and utilization as well as helping them analyze claims systematically, design research, put up good hypotheses, and provide stronger arguments which will help proffer solutions to world problems. He is resourceful, dedicated, result-driven and a very versatile and enthusiastic biochemistry lecturer who is highly passionate about his career, hence, has over twenty research publications in learned journals. He was a contract Lab. Technician from 2012 – 2016 at the Quality Control/Assurance Department of Guinness Nigerian PLC, Aba Abia State, Nigeria and has a lot of experience carrying out laboratory activities. He is a member of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). He is presently serving as the Departmental Academic Timetable Officer, member Departmental Committee on Students Examination Registration, a member Departmental Committee on Examination Malpractice and a member Departmental Committee on Covid19 Guidance Compliance. His research interest focuses on metabolic disorders, particularly obesity. His special interest on obesity is pinned on the fact that this disorder is prominent in metabolic syndrome and usually comes with other accompanying disorders such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, etc, therefore, treating/ameliorating it reduces the burden of the other accompanying disorders on the patient. His goal is to utilize molecular techniques to properly reveal genetic and hormonal activities on energy homeostasis and also to develop natural products/phytotherapies from medicinal plants capable of replacing the more toxic synthetic drugs used in treating these disorders so that the patients are protected from the heavy side effects of these drugs. He is also interested in cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders and cancer.
