Profile of The Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Administration)

Prof Simon James Utsalo was born on the 6th of April 1944 in Jattu, Etsakor West Local Government Area of Edo State Nigeria.  He holds an Associate Diploma in Medical Parasitology from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (London), 1970 and a Fellowship Diploma Medical Bacteriology from Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (FMLSCN) 1974.

Also in his academic kitty is a Masters Degree in Microbiology from Ohio University, Athens USA in 1978 and a Doctorate Degree from the same University in 1981.

He worked as a Graduate Assistant (Microbiology) Ohio University, Athens USA between (1979-1981) after which he was employed as a Lecturer and Consultant (Medical Microbiology) in the University of Calabar and UCTH from 1982-1986.

Since then, he has served as Senior Lecturer and Consultant, Medical Microbiology 1986-1991, Reader and Consultant (Medical Microbiology) 1991-1995 and Professor and Consultant (Medical Microbiology) 1995-till his recent appointment as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration).

Prof. Utsalo has various honours to his credit.

He is well published and has presented several papers in National and International Workshop and Conferences.


Profile of The Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Academics)

Professor Austin Obiekezie, a Professor of Aquatic Pathobiology was the Director of Institute of Oceanography and the first Unical Alumni to attain the office of a Professor, while Professor Utsalo was a Professor/Consultant with Medical Microbiology.

Born November 24th 1954 in Nguru, Yobe State, Professor Obiekezie graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1978 with an Upper Division, Second Class B.Sc (Hons) in Zoology.  He had his Fellowships/Exchange programmes outside Nigeria in October, 1981 from Tiergesundheisdienst Bayern (Animal Health Services for Bararia) Grub Bei Muenchen.  In 1983 he had his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Aquatic Pathobiology in University of Calabar, Institution/F. Meeres Kunde, Germany.

He was employed by the University of Calabar, as a Postgraduate Fellow/Research Assistant in 1983.  Since then he has been involved as a Research Fellow, till 1995 when he was confirmed as a Professor.

Prof. Austin IK. Obiekezie is a recipient of various honours, distinctions, awards/grants and a member of various learned societies.

He has held different and sensitive positions in the Institution, supervised Higher Degrees and served in International/Bilateral Agencies.

He has served in several relevant positions like Acting Head of Department of Biological Oceanography (1988-1995), Acting Head Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (1995-1997) member, University of Calabar Senate (1988-date) member, Senate panel on Investigation of Student Clandestine Activities.

Prof. Obiekezie has published well over 50 Journals and Articles.


Profile of The Registrar

The University of Calabar Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Julia Dachi Omang, was born on the 6th of september, 1952  in Ntamante, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

She had her Secondary Education at Holy Child Secondary School (Mount-Carmel) Ogoja, Cross River State from 1964 – 1969 and obtained WASC Division I.

She proceeded to the famous Mary Knoll College, Okuku, Ogoja for her Higher School Certificate in 1972.  That same year, she was admitted into the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and graduated  with B.A. ( Hons 2nd Class Upper) in 1975.

In 1981, she obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Distinction level from the University of Jos, Nigeria.  She got her Ph.D (Philosophy of Education) from the same University in 1989.  Not satisfied, Dr. (Mrs) Julia D. Omang proceeded to Galilee College, Nazarenth in Israel where she obtained a certificate in Administration of Higher Education in 2002.

In between her academic pursuit, Dr. (Mrs) Julia. Omang had worked as a Teacher in Holy Child Secondary School, Ogoja and Mary Knoll College, Okuku from 1980 – 1983, and as Asst. Zonal Supervisor, Post Primary School, Ogoja from 1983 – 1984.

In 1984, Dr. J. Omang was employed by the University of Calabar as Senior Assistant Registrar (Student Affairs Division) from where she rose in rank to become the university Registrar since 2009.

Dr. (Mrs) Omang has held various administration responsibilities amongst which are; Faculty Officer (Social Sciences), Principal Assistant Registrar (Development Division), Administrative Coordinator (Sandwich Degree Programme) and Director of Academic Planning . She is also a member of various University committees and has been a member of various Vice Chancellor search team.

The Registrar is a member of various Professional/Administrative bodies which includes; Member, Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA), Nigerian Institute of management (NIM), Fellow of institute of Corporate Administration (FCA) and Fellow, Chartered Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria.

Dr. (Mrs) Julia D. Omang is a member of various Boards both in and outside the university.  She has also performed various other Assignments as representative of the University.

Dr. (Mrs) Julia Omang has attended about thirty 0ne National and International Workshop/Seminar/Conferences.  She has publications including articles in National and International Journal.

A recipient of various Honours Commendations and academic Awards, the Registrar is also involved in various state and National Assignments as well as various positions of responsibilities in Religious/Social circles.

Dr (Mrs) Julia Dachi Omang, the Registrar of the University of Calabar is widely travelled and likes reading for pleasure and gardening.

Dr (Mrs) J. Omang is a devout Catholic and happily married to Hon. Timothy O. Omang and the marriage is blessed with five children.


Profile of The Bursar

The Bursar of the University of Calabar, Mr Obot Monday Nsebot, was born on the 22nd day of July, 1957 In Nung Obong, Nsit-Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom State Nigeria.

He began his academic journey in sahation  Army Secondary School Akare in the Local Government Area of his birth beween 1972-1976 where he obtained his West Africa School Certificate (W.A.S.C) Second Division. In 1978 he gained admission into the University of Calabar and graduated in 1982 with a B.sc (Accounting) second Class Upper Division.

In 1989 he enrolled for a Masters Degree in Business Administration and graduated with an MBA in 1991.

Between 1991-1993 Mr. Nsebot obtained a Diploma in Computer Programming and Applications and in 2006 he obtained an M.sc Accounting having been enrolled in 1999 all in the University of Calabar.

Mr. Obot M. Nsebot began his working Career as a Tax clark (Clerical Officer) with the Cross River State Board of Internal Revenue Calabar from 1977-1978.

After which he did vaction Jobs with Ministry of Education Calabar and First Bank of Nigeria PLC Calabar between July-September respectively.

Mr. Nsebot proceeded to do his mandatory Youth Service, with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1982/83 at First Bank PLC Calabar.

After his Youth Service, the young Accountant was employed by the University of Calabar as an Accountant ll in 1983, from from where he rose in rank to become Bursar since 2009.

The University Bursar is an Associate member of the Association of National Accountant of Nigeria (ANAN) AND Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM)

Mr Nsebot is a recipient of various Honours, Awards and Scholarship amongst which are; Best Accounting Students Awards (1982) High Joseph Onamo Agboye Memorial Award, Professor Edet R. Iwok Award, University of Calabar Bursar’s Award, Best overall Management student Award (1982) Obare and Company Ltd.

Management Development Award, Mercantile Bank Award, Chief Ita Ekpott Award, Dr. Pepper Bottling Company Award and Cropeen Nig. Ltd prize for the Best Graduating Student in MBA in the Department of Management Studies, UNICAL (1991).

Mr. Nsebot has interest in Investigation, Reading and Photography. He is a devoted Christian and Happily Married.


Profile of The Librarian

The University of Calabar has appointed a new librarian in the person of Dr. (Mrs) Edem, Margaret Bassey who has taken over from Prof. Olu Lawal.

Born on the 19th of June, 1962, Dr. (Mrs.) Edem hails from Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

She began her educational pursuit in 1968 at Government Primary School, Alu Street Calabar and in 1973 obtained her first school leaving certificate from the same school. Between 1974 – 1980, she attended Holy Child secondary school, Calabar, Federal Government Girls’ College, Ojo and Calabar where she got a WAEC O/L. In 1980 she was admitted into the University of Calabar graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts (ELS) degree. She then proceeded to the University of Ibadan where she obtained her Masters and Doctorate degrees in Library Science.

The new Librarian before her employment into the University of Calabar in 1987, had worked in the West Africa peoples institute (WAPI) as a tutor between 1986 – 1987.

In Unical, she was posted to the University Library from where she took up added responsibilities as, Library Representative on Law and Graduate School, Coordinator, Library Skills-GSS 1101 as well as membership of various committees including: Library Accreditation committee, Graduate school Result and Thesis vetting committee.

Dr. Edem has also supervised DLS, B. Ed and MLS Degree Projects since 2004 as well as taught various courses related to the use of English and Library Skills in the university.

The widely published librarian has also attended a lot of conferences and training programmes both locally and internationally.

She is the Editor of a journal of the Nigerian Library Association, Cross River state chapter, the National prayer secretary, Calabar missionary society of Nigeria and the secretary of her church marriage committee.

Dr. (Mrs) Edem, Margaret Bassey, Ph. D, CLN is a member of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and a chartered librarian of the Librarians Registration council of Nigeria (LRCN).
