THE HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Health Services Department is one of the service departments of the University established as an adjunct to effective University administration.

- To ease access to health care for staff, students and others engaged in downstream activities within the University Community and environs.
- To check malingering on the part of staff and students.
- To contribute to the University’s Corporate Society Responsibilities by extending services to the immediate host community.

ORGANOGRAM
DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES
Each Unit is headed by a Unit Head who reports to the Director of Health Services. The Director is the administrative head who oversees the day to day running of the Department, co-ordinates the activities of the unit and is responsible to the Vice Chancellor.
Services: Primary and Secondary Care.
Curative: Day to day consultation and treatment of patients.
Prevention: Immunization and various Extension services.
Promotion: Health Education Activities
The center runs a 24 - hour service. Doctors on call attend to Emergencies.
Laboratory Services: Basic Laboratory Investigations are carried out in Haematology, Microbiology and Clinical Pathology.
Theatre Services: The Operation Theatre is well equipped and thousands of thousands of minor and intermediate operations have been successfully carried out. Carefully selected elective gynaecological Orthopaedic and general surgical operations have also been done in collaborations with consultants from the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
Special Services: The following services are also carried out.
- Sickle Cell and genetic counseling
- Treatment of Tuberculosis (DOTs)
- HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing in Collaboration with GhAIN-a development partner.
NHIS: The centre is registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme to render primary and secondary care.
Staff Strength: There are professionals in each of the units – Doctors, Nurses, Laboratory Staff, Pharmacy Staff, Health Records Staff and a complement of ancillary staff.
The Physical Structure: The facility has recently been extended and upgraded and currently boasts 24 bed spaces, an X-ray Unit, Ultra Sound and ECG Machines. There is also a conference and clinical meeting room complete with multimedia projector and screen. In line with the NHIS requirement the extension has facilities for taking deliveries. A satellite TV service has also been put in place for the relaxation and education of staff and patients. To make the centre ICT Compliant, a Wi-Fi equipment has been installed and is undergoing test run. The major challenge in the area of renovation of the old structure and utilities is being addressed while an Accident & Emergency Unit has been designed. When all these are commissioned the centre would fully serve the health needs of the University.
