    UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR
    CALABAR
    FACULTY OF EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

COURSES AND DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

           HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE

The current trend in the field of Human Kinetics (Physical) and Health Education in Nigeria and at Global levels today tend towards specialization in some special and allied areas which numbered more than twelve.  These areas include: Psychology of Sports, Biomechanics of Physical Activities, Health Education, Adapted physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Organization and Administration of P.E. and Sports, Motor Learning and fitness, Athletics Training, Dance, Gymnastics, Recreation (including Parks and Gardens), tourism, Equipment and Facility management, among others.

In addition, the National Policy on Education 1981 (including the 2004 revised edition) as well as the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) 1989 indicated that the two symbiotic programme i.e. Physical Education and Health Education should hence forth operate as separate examinable courses at all levels of education i.e. from ELEMENTARY through SECONDARY to TERTIARY levels.  The National  University Commission (NUC) further directed that these two programmes that are basically scientific in nature may attract the B. Sc (Ed), B. Ed, or B.A (Ed) degree.  This is as a result of the fact that different institutions have convincingly justified the difference (Arts, Science and Education) Degrees attached to the programme.

The present Physical and Health Education programme in the university was established in the year 1987.  Initially, the programme was labeled Health and Physical Education (HPE) with most of the courses basically health oriented.  A comprehensive review was carried out and got the approval of the University Senate in 2002.  The dynamics of change as witnessed in the profession world-wide necessitated the current change in nomenclature and the current review carried out in the programme and the courses.  Thus, the review took care of emerging areas in Physical Education (now Human Kinetics) aspect, to fall in line with the spirit of National Policy on Education as well as the NUC directives.  The review as a matter of necessity   accredited two units to most of the courses and three units to most of the practical and skills related ones as well as Faculty-wide courses.

    Academic Contents:

    a)         Programme Title:

                                  B.Sc.(Ed) Human Kinetics
                                  B.Sc (Ed)Health Education
Post Graduate Diploma in Physical and Health Education
Graduate Programmes in Physical and Health Education

    Philosophy and objectives

    Philosophy

Generally, the philosophy of Human Kinetics and Health Education is to promote the two Symbiotic courses as an inextricable part of general education in which a sound mind is to be realized with due emphasis through a sound body.

The curricula components are embellished in the philosophical construct of idealism, naturalism, realism, pragmatism as well as existentialism.  The pedagogy is eclectic permitting a blend of the universals with the indigenous.  The ideology provides a way of life essentially explicit with endowments in varied skills ranging from cognitive to motoric and garnished with moral and ethical rectitude, good leadership qualities and healthy living.  The Philosophy is sustained in the rubrics of comprehensive programme of learning and praxis.  In this respect Human Kinetics philosophy is:

     a) To develop participants (students) that are physically, socially, mentally
and psychologically fit as well as skillfully sound through a
selected     Programme of plays, recreation, sports and games,
during playground, gymnasium, and swimming pool activities.

     b)  to produce effective and efficient leaders through leadership programme     entrenched in the curriculum.

     c) to produce professionals in the course, who can understand movement
education by themselves and able to teach others in schools and  sports  clubs.

     d)   to produce professionals in the course who can manage the physically
challenged individuals; and provide remedy and rehabilitation to
individuals with problems of metabolic nature- stroke, diabetics and
the injured from various courses on First Aid, ,Sports,Medicine,  Adapted Physical Education,   and Exercise Physiology.

On the other hand, the philosophy underlying the degree programme
in Health Education is to produce graduates imbued with enthusiasm to make contributions to Nigeria and the world at large by equipping  themselves with the conceptual framework ad skills considered necessary in understanding the nature of man life styles and other                                 health promotional requirements.

To arrive at these, Human Kinetic and Health Education derive
Components from its philosophical idealism, Naturalism, Realism,
Pragmatism and Existentialism to construct its curriculum for each
Level of the University Education in Kinetic Health and Physical
Education.  The philosophy is eclectic in nature permitting a blend
Of universal course contents with the indigenous course
Content in traditional sports and games.  The philosophy therefore,
Is to provide a way of life which direct the students’ life towards a
Healthy and sound mind in a healthy and sound body through active
participation in bit muscle educational activities based on both                                           practical and theoretical approaches.

     PREAMBLE
The current  trend in the field  of Physical and  Health  Education  in Nigeria and at Global levels  today  tend towards  specialization in some special and allied  areas which numbered more than  ten. These areas include: Psychology of Sports, Biomechanics of Physical Activities, Health Education, Adapted Physical Education, Exercise, Physiology, Organization and Administration of P.E and Sports, Motor Learning, Fitness Training, Dance, Gymnastics, Recreation (including Parks and Gardens), Tourism, Equipment and Facility management, among others.

The present Health and Physical Education (HPE) Programme as currently offered by the unit attract a B.Sc(Ed) degree. The courses are also basically Health Education inclined. Hence, the need for a review to also highlight the Physical aspect, to fall in line with the spirit of National Policy on Education as well as the NUC directives. The review as a matter of necessity accredited two units to most of the courses and three units to most of the practical and skills related ones as well as Faculty-wide courses. It also ensure that the new (Revised) Human Kinetics and Health Education programmes compare favorably with similar programmes as offered by other Universities in Nigeria and elsewhere. Additional the approval given by the senate of the University of Calabar for the transformation of the Physical and Health Education Unit into a full fledge autonomous Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education makes it mandatory to carry out the current review of programmes and courses.
