Prof. Mildred Edet John emerged as the Dean Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences.

Born on the 15th of April, 1952, Professor Mildred E. John had her first appointment as Lecturer in January 1996 before she rose to the rank of Professor.

The new Dean had her B. Sc. Nursing in 1979 from the University of Ibadan, Ph.D. in 1986 and post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDA) 1993 from the University of Calabar.

Professor Mildred E. John has served as member of various professional bodies such as National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Nigerian Cancer Society, Nigerian Institute of Management, Women’s Health Research Network of Nigeria (WHERNIN), African Aids Research Network, Association of African Universities (AAU), Association of Good Clinical Practice in Nigeria (AGCPN), North American Nursing Diagnosis. Association – International (NANDA-1) and Association of Nurses in AIDs care (ANAC).

She has held various positions in the University of Calabar such as pioneer Coordinator, Bachelor of Nursing Science Programme (1996-2000), Departmental Examination Officer (1996 -2000), Acting Head of Department, Nursing Science (2005, 2007 – 2008). Graduate School Representative (2005, 2007, 2008 – 2010), Sub Dean, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences (2006-2008), Coordinator, Departmental Research Committee (1998, 2005, 2007…)

Prof. Mildred E. John has also shouldered various responsibilities outside the University. She is widely published in over 40 national and international journals, has obtained 21 awards and attended over half a century of local, national and international conferences.

The new Dean has been involved in various community services such as mentoring of young Christian girls are young nurses. She has over the years developed skills in capacity building in various areas of nursing practice; HIV/AIDS counselling, Health Research, Curriculum Development and Development of Training Modules.

Prof. Mildred Edet is widowed with five children.

 

  1. Department of Medical Laboratory Science

    Department of Medical Laboratory Science WAEC, GCE or senior Secondary School Certificate with credit level passes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English at not more than 2 sittings together with a relevant pass in the Joint matriculation Examination (JME).  Pass in General certificate of Education att advanced Level in chemistry, Physics, Biology (or Zoology).

  2. UME ENTRY
    Candidates must have an appropriate pass in the UME examination of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).  In addition, the candidate must hold the WASC/SSCE/GCE O/L or its equivalent with credits in at least 5 subjects (at not more than 2 sittings,) including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

    DIRECT ENTRY
    i.          Candidates must possess the advanced level GCE or Higher School Certificate in at least 2 science subjects, chosen from biology/Zoology, Physics and Chemistry.  In addition candidates must have credits I n5 other subjects in O’ Level GCE/SSCE including Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English language.

    Ii          Already trained nurses must possess the Registered Nurse Certificate (RN) of the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria (N&MCN) and in addition hold the GCE/SSCE/WASC or its equivalent, with credits in at least 5 subjects (at not more than 2 sittings) including English language and at least 2 science subjects chosen from biology.  Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
    Direct entry candidates will be placed at the 200 level of study.  The non-nursing qualified direct candidates will be expected to sit for at least 2 professional examinations like the UME candidates (that is, General Nursing and Midwifery or Psychiatric Nursing).

  3. Department Radiography

The minimum entry requirements for admission into the college of medical Sciences are applicable.  This includes five ‘O’ level (SSCE of GCE/WASC or NECO) credits in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English language and Mathematics, plus a pass in the Joint Admission Matriculation Examination, provided the cut-off point is made.

  5. Department of Public Health

    The Department of Public Health was established in 1979, started as the Department of Community Medicine primarily to teach undergraduate medical students for the Bachelor of Medicine programme (MBBCh). In 1984 the department started the postgraduate Master of Public Health (MPH).  In 1999 Senate changed the name to the department to Public Health.  In 2006 a Ph.D in Public Health commenced, and a Bachelor of Public Health (BPH)  Degree programme in the 2009/2010 academic session.  Areas of concentration for the MPH and specialization for the Ph.D are: Health Education and Health Promotion, Epidemiology Environment Health, Public Health Nutrition, Health Services Management, Primary Health Care.

    The Department focuses on training high quality Public Health professionals through sound theoretical foundation in the natural, social, and health sciences, and to build skills for public health action in general disease prevention and control, emerging communicable disease, emergency and disaster management, and basic and health systems research. Training in the department emphasizes problem solving and community-based approach to managing multidimensional public health problems in the society.

    The public health situation in Nigeria grows in complexity with new challenges, dwindling resources, management of human resources for health (HRH), and quest for practical and evidence based solutions to health problems.  The extent to which the Department is sufficiently responsive to national public health needs in the future determines its significance and growth in current and future national health order.

     

    Bachelor of Public Health Programme
    Public Health is a distinct professional area of the health sciences, and a multidisciplinary field comprising the desperate health professionals, sanitary engineers, scientist and other experts, who aim at promoting health preventing and controlling disease. Historically, improved health status in most developed countries is claimed to be largely due to public health actions and not due to routine treatment or clinical management.  In Nigeria, inadequate attention to the critical role of public health in the prevention of health problems protection promotion and sustenance of people’s health result in high morbidity and mortality rate of communicable and non-communicable disease.

    Training public health professionals at undergraduate level helps to produce the much needed human resources for health to tackle public health problems in Nigeria, and build needed capacities in critical areas. The Bachelor of public health (BPH) training equips students with theoretical knowledge, skills, and research techniques to tackle current and emerging public health problems.  The BPH degree also serves as a supplementary feeder programme for the Master of Public Health (MPH) and the Ph.D in Public Health.

    Objectives
    Objectives of the BPH programme are to:

    1. Train professionals health human resources in Public Health;
    1. Provide student-centered educational experience that encourages depth, and application of principles and method of public health;

     

    1. Provide field and community-based experience in relevant areas of Public Health;
    1. Build capacity in critical public and private sectors where public health expertise is lacking; and

     

    1. Provide opportunities for career advancement in Public Heath.

    Admission Requirement
    5-years programme (UME)
    Admission into the five years BPH programme through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requires candidates to have a minimum of five (5) Ordinary Level (0/L) credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings.

    4-year Programme (Direct Entry)
    Admission into the four-year(4) BPH programme through direct entry requires Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Health, National Diploma in Environment Health, Public Health Nursing from West African Health Examination Board (WAHEB), Community Health Practice (CHO or equivalent) in health-related fields with a minimum of Upper Credit.  In addition the candidate must have a minimum of five (5) Ordinary Level (0/L) credits in English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two (2)  sittings.

     

    MPH Admission Requirements
    Admission to the programme is open to graduates of the University of Calabar or other universities recognized by the Senate. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours and minimum CGPA 3.25/5 or 2.75/4 in any of the following areas Pubic health, Biology, Medical Microbiology, Medical laboratory Science, Health Education (Not obtained from a Faculty of Education), Biochemistry, and Nutrition.

    Duration
    The MPH at the University of Calabar is a full time taught programme for minimum of two (2) years and maximum of three (3) years.

     

    Ph.D Admission Requirements
    MPH or its equivalent with a minimum of 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Applicants are required to submit a one-page mission statement and to attend interview in the Department.

    Duration
    The Ph.D. in Public Health is a full time, taught programme for minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters.
