Dr. Nelson Chukwudi Osuchukwu

DR NELSON CHUKWUDI OSUCHUKWU joined the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar in 2001 as lecturer II and rose to the rank of Associate Professor in 2014. He holds Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from Imo State University in 1987, Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2001 and Ph.D in Medical Sociology (2005) both from University of Calabar. He received TETFUND Institution-Based Research Intervention Allocation on the topic Bacteriological and Physicochemical Quality of Drinking Water in selected communities in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria in 2015 as the lead researcher. Dr. Osuchukwu is a beneficiary of Ph.D Study Fellowship from the University of Calabar for Doctoral Programme in Medical Sociology, Department of Sociology, University of Calabar, Nigeria. He was honoured with a certificate of Attendance for Academic Staff Workshop on Quality Teaching for Quality Learning in Higher Education in 2013 in the University of Calabar. Dr. Nelson C. Osuchukwu received award from Faculty of Allied Medical Science students Association (FAMEDSSA) in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions toward the facilitation of students activities in 2010. In 2011 he received another award from Faculty of Allied Medical Science Students Association in recognition of his contributions in Academic Development of Students in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar. He was honoured with a certificate for attending Quality of Service Assessment and Resource Tracking Survey Studies (QSART) training organized by the World Bank and The Federal Ministry of Health in conjunction with Hanovia Medical Limited (Health Management Consultants) in 2013 at Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. He teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in masters’ and Ph.D programmes. As part of his social responsibilities, he gave health talk in March 2018 to Federal Road Safety Corps RS6.1 Cross River State Sector Command on the topic – Importance of Good Vision to Drivers. He presented a paper (Poster) in 2015 at the Annual Conference of the American Public Health Association (APHA) held in Chicago, USA on A Review of Access to Eye care Services in Nigeria. He is a reviewer of Global Journal of Medical Sciences Published by the University of Calabar. He is involved in research and mentoring of younger lecturers and graduate students in the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar. Dr. Osuchukwu has attended several conferences both International and National till date. For example, he attended the 8th Annual General Meeting/Scientific Conference of the Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa in April 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya and the Nigerian Optometric Association Scientific Conference and Expo/41st Annual General Meeting in July 2017 at Benin City, Edo State. Ongoing research projects include, Socio-economic implications of visual impairment and academic performance in Cross River State, Nigeria and Socio-economic and health implications of Child labour in Calabar Municipality, cross River State, Nigeria. The preliminary findings are still in progress. Furthermore, he is the Chairman, Centre of Excellence for National Collaborative Centre for Education and Training in Health Planning and Management, Department of Public Health, University of Calabar. He is a member of the following Professional Association viz Nigerian Optometric Association (MNOA); Public Health Association of Nigeria (MPHAN); Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa (ASPHA); Member, African Federation of Public Health Association (MAFPHA); Member World Federation of Public Health Association (MWFPHA) and American Association of Public Health (AAPH). Dr Osuchukwu has completed supervision of two Ph.D students and more than seventeen Masters of Public Health (MPH) students. Other supervisions are at different stages of completion. Other university responsibilities include; Faculty representatives in the following faculties viz, Management Sciences, Law, Social Sciences, Arts and Institute of Education, University of Calabar. He has been Graduate School Representatives for M.Sc and Ph.D candidates defence of their dissertations and theses till date. For community service, he is a member of Special Marshal Federal Road safety Corps RS6.1, Cross River Sector Command from 1990 till date; member, National Electoral Officer, Presidential General Election in Cross River State in 2011 and Collation Officer Anambra State Gubernatorial Election in 2013. He is also the Lay Synod Secretary, Diocese of Calabar, Anglican Communion till date. Member Calabar Sports Club and Member, Senior Staff Club, University of Calabar. Member, HIV/AIDs Committee, University of Calabar, and member Adhoc committee on Admission, University of Calabar from 2010 – 2012. In terms of Online Index / Database, his google scholar citation in publication count is over forty with one hundred and forty-four citation count. He is also visible in Research Gate. Dr Nelson Osuchukwu had published over forty scholarly papers both in International and National Journals with high impact factors and presented some papers at scientific conferences and meetings within and outside Nigeria. He was appointed Acting Head of Department of Public Health, from 1st October 2010 to 30th September 2012. He was a Senate Member, University of Calabar from October 2010 – September 2012. Currently, he is the Acting Head of Department of Public Health, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar. The appointment took effect from 1st February 2018 and a Senate Member of the University from February 2018 till date.
