SYNAPSES OF DR BASSEY EPHRAIM (ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR) Dr Bassey Ephraim was born on the 13th of March 1969 as the last child in a family comprising three girls and two boys. His parents were Efik natives from the Royal Etim Efiom Clan in present-day Calabar South Local Government Area of CRS. Unfortunately due to the civil war, he lost both parents at infancy, and was raised by his aged Grandmother and Uncle. His early education commenced in 1974, at the Calabar Preparatory International Nursery School, at Hawkins Road, Calabar. On completion in 1981, he advanced to the famous Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar, for his Secondary Education. He completed it in 1986. He then went to the University of Calabar to read Geology between 1986 and 1991, when he obtained a BSc with Second Class Honours (Lower Division). In 1994, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his postgraduate studies at the Department of Geology, and obtained a Master’s of Science Degree in Mineral Exploration in 1998, under the tutelage/supervision of the Late Prof. A. Azubuike Elueze, FNMGS, FNAPE, FSS.  Between 1998 and 2005, he was enrolled again at the University of Calabar, for a doctoral programme, which led to his being awarded a PhD degrees in Petrology & Geochemistry in 2006. After his doctoral defense in 2005, Dr. Ephraim joined the academic staff of the then Anambra State University of Science and Technology as an Assistant Lecturer, and was upgraded to Lecturer II on the 28th of August, 2006, before his promotion to Lecturer I on 1st October, 2006. He made giant strides and immense contributions towards the growth of the then New University, before moving on to the Niger Delta University, Amassoma – Bayelsa State in December 2007. In 2008, Dr. Bassey Ephraim returned to the University of Calabar to take an Appointment as Lecturer I in the Department of Geology. He has since risen to the rank of Associate Professor, and his currently being appraised for the position of a full Professor. Dr Ephraim is an upcoming academic/researcher in the areas of petrology, geochemistry, and exploration/environmental geosciences. He has, so far, authored or co-authored 32 articles in refereed scholarly journals, and attended seminars, workshops and other scientific meetings within and outside Nigeria. He has presented a total of 9 Conference papers. In addition, he has supervised several BSc, PGD, MSc and PhD theses, and currently has a myriad of postgraduate and undergraduate students under his tutelage/supervision. He is a: -       Registered Member, Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientist (COMEG) (Reg. No. GEM 001274); -       Corporal Member, Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) (Reg. No. C – 06 –  3031) -       Corporate Member, Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologist (NAH) (Reg. No. CH – 2010 –  00742) -       Member, Association of Geoscientist in Developing Countries (AGID) He is part of the Petrology/Mineralogy Research Group in the Department of Geology, University of Calabar, and collaborates actively with researchers from within and outside Nigeria. His current research interests include: geothermometry, geobarometry and P-T conditions of formation of rocks occurring within the Oban-Obudu massif of Southeastern Nigeria; geochemistry and characterization of basement rocks of Southern Nigeria; investigation of granulites and related rocks in southeastern Nigeria, and; geochemical, isotopic and economic appraisal of mineral deposits in southern Nigeria. He is also actively involved in researches of environmental interests. He served as Editorial Assistant of the Journal of Mining and Geology from 1994-2013, and was part of the Editorial Team that produced the Program and Book of Abstract of the 34th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, Ife’98. He is currently a peer reviewer for many learned journals, including the Earth Science Research Journal, Indian Journal of Earth Science, Journal of Mining and Geology, Tropical Journal of Applied Natural Science, etc. He has also served as Consultant to many organizations/clients including the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), etc. Furthermore, Dr. Ephraim has distinguished himself in several leadership positions within and outside the Universities that he served, some of which includes: i.            Chairman,  -       Departmental Fieldwork Committee, from 2015 to Date -       Earned Allowance Committee, from 2014 to Date -       Faculty Graduate Committee, from 2014 to 2016 -       Departmental Graduate Committee, from 2012 to 2014 -       Graduate School Vetting Committee (Unit B), from 2015 to 2016            ii.            Member, -       University of Calabar Solar Power Project, from 2017 to Date -       Examination Misconduct Committee (Departmental) from 2010 to Date -       Graduate School Board, from 2014 to 2016 -       University of Calabar Senior Staff Club, from 2009 to Date iii.            Coordinator, Marine Geology Programme, from 2010 to 2011 iv.            Secretary, Departmental Academic Board, from 2009 to 2012 v.            Examination Officer (Departmental), from 2009 to 2011 vi.            Graduate School Representative in Faculty of Marine Sciences, from 2015 to Date vii.            Faculty of Science Representative in: t.        Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, from 2014 2016 u.      Faculty of  Education,  from 2012 to 2014 Finally, Dr. Bassey Ephraim is a talented comedian, and also loves watching football and Nigerian movies.
