Ajake, U. E. (2003). Pragmatic approach to teaching of home-economics for acquisition of cognitive skills in Senior Secondary School in Uyo Akwa Ibom State.  Journal of Vocational Education and Information Management (JOVEIM) 1(1). Pp 27-38.This study was designed to compare the senior secondary      schools student acquisition of cognitive skills based on guided and expository approaches in learning. Three cognitive variables namely: understanding, reasoning and creativity were considered. This study was carried out with 120 senior secondary II (SSII) Food and Nutrition students randomly drawn from four selected schools in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. Two comparable groups- experimental and control, each having 60 students were used. A concept in Food and Nutrition- “Raising Agent” was selected and taught to the two groups using guided method for the control group. Pre-test was administered before the teaching of the concept and after which, post-test was administered two days after the treatment. The scores from the test were analyzed using t-test statistical analysis of the means at a probability level of 0.05. The findings reveal that the experimental group performed significantly higher than the control group in terms of understanding, reasoning and creativity. This implies that the treatment used on the experimental group is responsible for the difference. It can be inferred that the guided learning approach has influenced the students level of understanding, reasoning and creative abilities in learning of Food and Nutrition in senior secondary schools. Therefore, the study recommends the use of guided-learning approach in the teaching of Home Economics (Food and Nutrition) in senior secondary schools.
